My Tofi is in season and has just reached the 'danger zone'. She tends
to ovulate early around day 8 and as many of you will be aware there
is a very good reason that she is not being allowed any more puppies.
This morning I let her out to toilet in the back garden with her
daughter Rika and my castrated male Feri who will be 11 in November,
whilst I let my other (entire) dog out at the front.

After letting Monty back in I went to see to the others and get their
breakfast from the fridge in the garage. To my horror Feri and Tofi
were locked together in a full mating 'tie' in the middle of the
patio.

Whilst I am 100% sure that there will be no puppies as Feri was
castrated many years ago to attemtp to resolve his bilateral alopecia
(which he still hasBTW - it didn't work!) I am totally dumbstruck that
a castrated dog of nearly 11 would be able to mount a (very willing)
bitch after such a length of time since he had his wherwithal
surgically removed. He does do all the other flirty stuff but has
never mated anything before or since castration.

Any one else had any experience of this? Or is Feri a 'one off'?

A rather bemused Rosemary

Hi Rosemary, I don't think he is a 'one-off'

A friend had a castrated male - senior - who did mate and tie with the
friend's entire female each time she was in season. In fact, there was lots
of 'flirty' behaviour, and Gena was often very persistent till Chant
performed for her. He had never been used at stud, and was castrated quite
young, though not before puberty.

Have you checked Feri's thyroid functions to see if it could be responsible
for his alopecia?

Cheers
Ros

Hi Rosemary,

I recently experienced this with my own Loti and Eddie who was in for rehoming! Loti was with Eddie & Bos as I do have an entire male. Both Eddie and Bos have been castrated. Bos was the one more interested but kept choosing the wrong dog i.e. Eddie! Then one day with no warning at all Eddie was tied with Loti!! Even after that Eddie still showed no signs of craving Loti. I must admit it was all very interesting!!!

Quite a few years ago I had an old castrated retriever who would let me know when my Tash was ready - a vet laughed at me when I told him this and said it wasn't possible!!! Ermm I think I am now laughing at him!!!

I think we will see that this happens quite frequently.

My Barney was only 8 months old and I met up with a village friend, Harry
and his 8 yr old GSP bitch who was in full season. I went to put Barney on
the lead as I could see he was 'very' interested in his girlie but Harry
said 'Nay lass, dunno worry, she'll not stand for a pup like that, she'll
tekk him where to go. Needless to say a few mins later Barney was 'locked'
on and Harry had to eat his words! Barney was castrated a few months later
but he always has an eye for the ladies and the odd gent!! My vets says you
can 'disarm' them but you cant take away their brain!! Lol!

Old Barney 2 strokes, hey Helg?! ;0) That's my nephew!!

Fickó mated Bri and Nya when I had Glandular Fever and got distracted, shortly after he bounced back to me at 13 months old. He'd had a tardack jab but still got Bri pregnant. She was spayed earlier than planned, 3 weeks after her season instead of 9wks (that's when we discovered she was pregnant and I would not have let her have cross breed pups anyway, having met Vizsla x GSPs who were nutters) but 6yrs on he is still entire, as is Stuka who came home in 2009 at 7yrs old when his owner sadly died. We occasionally tardack them both if we have clients that are in season. Fickó is only keen on the girls after the LH surge, he doesn't whine or anything at night, as long as he's with me, bless my little worry bucket. Stuka is adjusting to living in a multi dog/both sex household beautifully too. As the boys have got older they are much less phased by girls in season and only waste energy being excited at the optimum times!!
