Hello,

I have just installed Ubuntu 6.10 and find it great to use for web browse
and email together with photo work. I am however having trouble
understanding how to "install" programs onto it. Is there any easy way or do
I have to persevere.

Happy Christmas.

I'm a newbie too and am struggling a bit, but I've figured out how to
install some progs.

Linux software is stored in 'repositories' and you use Synaptic (in
PCLinuxOS.. I dunno if its called that in UBUNTU)to search a repository
for what you want, or just to browse what they have.

Type in 'GAIM' for example, press 'Search', and it will download and
install GAIM for you, seamlessly.

Btw Sandra, there are better groups than this one, for newbies.

Most of what you need can be done by using the "Add/Remove" at the
bottom of the "Applications" Menu.

Also an easy way is to use something like Automatrix

One of the really good things about ubuntu is that because it's so
popular the support forums are very good. Find the ubuntu forums and
register. Have a look at the "HowTo's" these will give you step by step
instructions on how to do things.

One thing worth having a look at first is Automatrix, just search for it
on the ubuntu forum. There you will find the instructions you need to
install it.

It in turn will automate the downloading and instillation of loads of
useful applications and stuff. Like mp3, DVD support popular programs
like Google Earth and plugins for Flash playback.

Each of these could be installed individually but Automatrix dose such a
good job it may be all you need.

I have the same problem with my ISP's news server. I'm in the UK on NTL
their text news support is normally fine, but no content in the
alt.os.linux.ubuntu group...

I've found the IRC channel extremely helpful. Admittedly I use Kubuntu
(and the Kubuntu IRC channel), but it's the same as Ubuntu 'under the hood'.

Cheers,
Tim
