Hello!

Just an idea for now. What you are thinking about icons for nodes?

Conversation from IRC to get an idea:
[21:43:23] <JDat> Hello!
[21:43:39] <JDat> What about node icons on map?
[21:43:55] <JDat> Right now all nodes are shown as towers.
[21:44:25] <JDat> It would be great id each node have own mini icon.
[21:45:31] <JDat> Ideally that user can upload icon himself.
[21:45:42] <craag> That'd be cool
[21:46:47] <JDat> It's an idea from APRS.
[21:46:55] <JDat> They already have icons.
[21:47:59] <JDat> Also maybe every node can send ICONid and parser will show icon by ICONid
[21:49:37] <craag> that would be very like aprs

So. There could be 90 predefined icons or one custom icon uploaded by node owner.

Example packet data type:

Ix

  • Node type
  • Given as printable character from '!' to '~' except ',' (comma) '[' (left square bracket), ']' (right square bracket) and '|' (pipe)
  • Only 1 character
Example for icon set:
char node or '!': (default), no icon, tower
char '#': Gateway node
char '$': Repeater node
char ''%: Sensor node
etc..
char '~': custom, read from server database

I like this idea a lot, nice and simple and easy to implement, it should obviously be optional for the nodes (to keep compatibility).
I'd be keen not to use the aprs icons themselves but perhaps develop a set of our own (better quality graphics etc).

Hello James!
The idea is not just icon on web map.
Main idea is to identify node.
Let's assume that I parameter could be extended in following way:
Iabc
I - info parameter
a - function. For example
0 - unknown
1 - gateway
2 - repeater
3 - weather sensor
4 - baloon
5 - rocket
6 - chase car
7 - truck

Each of function have subparameters. For example for gateway b parameter is platform:
0 - unkonow
1 - x86
2 - ARM
3 - arduino
4 - AVR
5 - STM
6 - Rastpberry Pi
7 - Parallax propeller (my favorite :-)
z - custom
C subparameter: OS
0 - unkonown
1 - linux
2 - Windows
3 - MacOS
4 - embedded
z - custom
etc
d parameter:
0 - unkonown
1 - indoor fixed
2 - outdoor fixer
3 - portable
4 - solar power
z - custom
etc

Server just parse I parameter and show correct icon ir many icons in overlay.
Similar to APRS, but much simpler and better. And of course with much better graphics. :-)

Best regards,
JDat Deface.
