Hi all,

CUSF is attempting our first launch in 2 years. This is set to happen TODAY 14th March at 4pm, from Churchill College (in 2.5 hours)

The payload contains a simple cloud classifier and camera. We are just hoping to get some practice getting things in the air, and some footage of the flight. We are using a 200g balloon, 1kg payload, aiming for 17000m burst altitude.

Flight predictions are very interesting — heading towards Canterbury, across the Thames Estuary, so filling will be a very delicate operation to avoid undershoot or overshoot.

Unfortunately, this flight will only be tracked using a single Stratoflights GPS. We are working on procuring more GPS/radiosondes and any help with this would be appreciated! I will be working on telemetry so that hopefully we can transmit location data by next launch. Really should have done it beforehand, but term has been rough ...

This will be our last launch with our outgoing team leader of HABs Polina. Many thanks to her for all the work put in over the past year!

Best,

What tracker did you say you are using? If it's just the stratoflights 3G/4G tracker then that's a very good way to lose your flight....
A bit of a step backwards from the usual high quality tracking from CUSF flights in the past to be honest!

I wish you luck, and I hope someone can get you some radiosonde or some other reliable tracker to use.

Hi all,

Sorry about the announcement being sent after the launch itself -- I sent it in quite late and it took a while to get approved.

We have achieved a very successful launch, landing near a public bridleway in Ashford. This was due largely to miraculous luck on our part... We have also acquired some beautiful footage of the sky during sunset! Congratulations and many thanks to all students involved.

It seems like CUSF HABs has had a quiet 2 years. We will definitely be looking at recovering the tracking systems we used for previous launches, and I plan to scavenge for radiosondes over the Easter break. If anyone wants to help with the radiosondes, or generally the project of getting CUSF HABs tracking back up to scratch, feel free to email.

Best wishes,
Arin
