Camera Battery Life?

I hope this is going to the right people as most of the post seem to
be regarding dating or sex !!

Considering that most flights people possibly be several hours
duration then how do you make the cameras (e.g. the Canon Ixus 400)
last so long?

I have yet to come across any compact camera that would let you turn
it on and take photos or video for longer than an hour.

The Canon Powershot I used back in 2008 - was running the hacked CHDK
firmware ( I'm not a code monkey, but with help I figured it out! )

It was running a script that basically took a few pictues in
succession, then a 15 sec movie, then stopped for 15 seconds or so.

Running off 2 Lithium Ion non rechargeable batteries it was able to
last an entire flight and indeed the first flight it was still taking
photographs and movies after about 5 hours when we found the payload
in a paddock full of sheep.
