There is a high probability that B-64 aka M0XER-4 will make it back to the UK tomorrow or Friday. The current Hysplit predictions have it making landfall around Cornwall.

If people could listen out on 434.500 it should be transmitting Contestia and the usual pips. It will also be transmitting APRS @ 10mW on 434.500 once its over the UK.

Launched on the 12th of July and with a current duration of over 400 hours B-64 has circumnavigated the the northern hemisphere covering over 25,000km over some of the most remote terrain in the planet.

There is a possibility B-63 may be following it as well.

Cheers,

Anthony M0UPU

Good grief, I'm in Cornwall!!
I have got aprs already set up and will retune to 434.5.
I will also try out Matt's Android app but it is a port to BlackBerry so may behave oddly.
Can the Android app handle Contestia?

Still, I will experiment tonight since it seems I'm in the right place at the same time.

Isn't that a typo ?
Shouldn't it be 144800 APRS and 434500 Contestia?.

I was hoping someone more westerly than me would get the news and be able to do a receive attempt.

Good luck

I think you have a better chance of hearing 144.800 MHz APRS first because 434.500 one will only turn on in UK territorial waters.
I don't think there are Contestia decoders for Android yet.

No typo. Over the UK where airborne use of amateur radio is forbidden Leo is transmitting APRS on the license exempt 434.500Mhz @ 10mW alternately with the Contestia.

I have an APRS system on 144.800MHz and have a system setup for contestia on 434.500MHz also. I am probably the most South Westerly regular Balloon tracking station.

Have put the word out down here, so hopefully a few more people might tune in.

Which modes can the Android app handle please?
If not Contestia, can it decode APRS?

I can monitor both 144.8 and 434.5 since my handheld can scan two frequencies simultaneously. I'm currently staying in the Penzance area.

Chances of success are probably low since I only have a handheld with a 1/4wave telescopic antenna and a juryrigged cable. But I have had some success RX-ing packets.

However, if not the android app then I have no way of getting this into Habitat - I only have PocketPacket on my iPad. For that matter, that does not function as a digipeater‎ or iGate. I suppose I could grab a screenshot for posterity if it really does overfly me position.

‎Any advice gratefully received

Thanks

Hi OI,

Matt's Android App only does RTTY/TurboHAB. If PocketPacket can decode then you could have a go at decoding the packets anyway for personal satisfaction, or perhaps record the audio and decode it with a suitable program on a less limited OS later. ;)

iOS only allows one app at a time go record... so if I let PocketPacket can decode them then I can't record the audio stream too.
I think I will leave PocketPacket running overnight and screengrab anything I see... crude but at least it might show proof of any overflight.
When is B-64 due to overfly and is it going N-S or S-N?

Everything OK for the Intermediate Exam btw?
I am all ready to go here but as yet RSGB hasn't taken any money from me.

Best

PS Matt's app looks very impressive even after a dodgy port to my Blackberry!

I have habrotate linked to pstRotator  and connected to an AZ/EL rotator, with a 17Dbd Antenna system for 2/70 bolted to my patio as still waiting for a concrete base to be done.

Would really like to Auto track B-64 if it comes within range, it does not show in habrotate, not unreasonably. Is there a code edit that can be done, without wasting peoples time.

Hopefully will receive Leo’s balloon when hopefully it gets back over the UK

Do we have any idea which of the Hysplit prediction variants it seems to be following?
Some of them had B-64 going further south in the Channel to others.
As of now I'm not picking anything up in Cornwall.

G8TQH is now receiving b-64 from the U.K, a‎s well as our colleagues in Ireland.
I can't hear anything, but maybe I just don't have the sensitivity or elevation required. Will keep listening.

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately habrotate only links to Habitat, and the APRS Data doesn't go into habitat (is imported directly into spacenear.us from aprs.fi)

Your best bet would be to use PstRotator's built-in APRS tracking to track M0XER-4, people are planning to igate the ISM APRS too, so this should continue to work over France/UK.

I'm receiving pips and periods of diddly-dahs from B-64 on 434.5005 (with centre of signal at 1500 on dl-fldigi waterfall), but it's not decoding yet.

You may need to enable the RxID button at the top right in dl-fldigi.
The payload sends a little RSID code that dl-fldigi can use to tune and
set the correct mode.

I just picked up APRS bursts on 434.5 for the first time here in Cornwall, after relocating to the beach :-)
May try recording or decoding them later

‎Nice signals from the castle atop St Michael's Mount (but if it hadn't worked from up here then my TH-F7E would have been in total disgrace!)
If I can avoid the odd looks of my fellow tourists, I may sit down and take out the cables to try and decode the packets.

Strong signals from B-64 tonight in SE London, S/N +10dB at best, but drift makes it hard to decode.
