For those not in Bolton Wireless Club that seem to have already locked on to my signal (Hi Ross G6GVI plus G4CFP), I've finally got some head room & a set of student victims to return to flight.

Flying a standard PITS radio with SSDV on Sunday morning from slightly north of Shrewsbury.
  • LoRa 434.222MHz, callsign Kongy (don't ask, that's what they chose)
  • RTTY, 434.444MHz, callsign Jessica (if you don't know why, watch the film) - out of the box settings, I'll confirm once I've got fl-digi working - it's not happy on new (Intel) MacBooks.
There may be my BakTrak2 on LoRa on 434.666MHz, callsign BakTrak2. Location only. It's a seperate ProMini + RFM95 + SIM808 combo but I'll skip the backup SMS this time!

We have a base station for both LoRa radios plus a HAB Chase Pi for both LoRa radios plus RTTY and the prediction is for a local landing so we should be well covered but the more the merrier.

Yes Nick, I was surprised that I could pick up your transmitter ground-tests (from inside your garage?)
We're only about a mile apart across the valley - but my antenna is pointing straight through the house in your direction.
Jack G8HIK also had a listen from Radcliffe, but couldn't detect you from there.

We'll certainly have a listen for your flight (and Kevin's) on Sunday  - good luck!

Maybe it's because the camera is looking in your direction ;-)

Does anyone know if the newer Sondehub version of PITS LoRa-Gateway has some material changes to the LoRa radio code - I've built everything fresh but my BakTrak Arduino code base only yields CRC errors on the gateway console - it uses a prior copy of Dave's lora.c file. I can dig through the code &/or go for a do-over on the Arduino but I hadn't factored that in to this weeks plan, nor working on a hack to get RTTY running on something as it makes teachers twitchy if I have more than two open laptops in the passenger seat so I'm a bit behind on prep now!

It doesn't; the changes are only around the Sondehub upload.

CRC errors can happen if the Tx and Rx frequencies are mismatched.

Nick,

What Mode will the LoRa be operating?

It was Mode 1 when on test last week John.

Note that when you open up the payload details on the new Sondehub, it shows the modulation type (and frequency) - for example with Kevin's "KW05" on test at the moment:

Thanks, I hadn't spotted that on Sondehub - very useful.

Yup, mode 1 for me, the rest is in the "to learn" pile.

No one should try to decode BakTrak - it needed some radical updates. I'm receiving it after a fashion now but my sentence needs some tidy up so it mostly gets rejected and/or crashes the gateway - unless you want to try some remote debugging. But I can pull the location out which is all I'm really needing.

The predicted landing is close enough to the launch site we may get real lucky and catch the landing using the Mk1 Eyeball.

I'm unlikely to be on IRC as I'll have my hands full student herding.

Thanks to the many people who tracked the flight today - a much appreciated backup to the mobile & base radios.

For reasons yet to be determined the payload ascended much slower than planned / calculated which shifted the landing point a fair chunk but it all ended well with one of the group spotting the final descent in to an easily accessible field.

How many descents were there? :-)

Funny you should mention that as I haven't looked at all the telemetry details yet:

but I have picked out the 236 entries from the CSV & KML from MJSChase01 who consistently reported an altitude of 30m and occasionally a location near Skegness!

Yes thanks Nick It was useful to test my receiver software which obviously needs a few mods . For some reason it was passing through some oddball readings . Good to see some balloon activity up here in the NW though cheers.

Hmmm, that would explain the erratic landing prediction then - happy to help get your code ship shape before it gets used again ;-)
