Hi.
Without wishing to start a flame war...
Most of the common problems people seem to have with Fldigi and DlFldigi on
Windows Vista and later, stem from (again, with no disrespect intended) the
users lack of understanding just how different Vista/7 and 8 are, compared to
XP and earlier.
In particular, the user's rights/permissions issues, and program compatability
settings tools.
The user specific files are also stored in a subtly different place on the later
systems than on XP and earlier. But always locatable by using the system
environment variable %USERPROFILE% thus:-
C:\%USERPROFILE%\dl-fldigi.files
(Go on, copy/paste that into the address bar in Windows Explorer, and you'll go
straight there.)
That will get you to the dl-fldigi files folder on all systems, Win2000 and later.
Often, if you've updated the program, you may need to delete or rename those
files, to force xxFldigi to reset and recreate them.
(I find, just renaming the files fldigi_def.xml and dl-fldigi.prefs to
fldigi_def.xml.old, and dl-fldigi.prefs.old effects a minimum impact "Reset".)
It will also help you in the long term, if you try out and play with the generic
(Non HAB) version of Fldigi (or Dl-Fldigi in non HAB mode.) In particular, how
to setup and tune into RTTY signals. There are "Lots" on the bands most
weekends, plus some of the meteological transmissions are reliable and
consistant arround Europe and the UK.
4583kHz, 7646kHz and 10100.8kHz All RTTY, 50bd, 450Hz shift. Easily
findable by anyone. (Big Signals too, and some useful meteo' info to boot!)
(If your radio is set to use USB, as is recomended for digi modes on HF, you'll
need the "Rv" button lit, in the bottom right of (dl)Fldigi, for these RTTY signals
to decode.)
The two versions of the program are very similar at that level, and can both live
on the same PC without interaction, even (subject to enough CPU "Grunt"
available) have both versions running for different purposes at the same time!
(You WILL need two fully indipendant sound cards though.....)
The HAB version can run in a "non HAB mode" by the way. But is not as
up-to-date as the latest on W1HKJ's download page. But good enough for
most.
