Hi,

I see a lot of technical jargon on this group which I don't understand. However, I have basic amateur radio knowledge (I'm an Intermediate License holder) interested in tracking HAB.

I'm aware of various suitable radios, eg Yaesu 817, SDR Play, Airspy etc but wondered if anyone can offer advice on this please? I don't really want to run to the expense of the 817 at this stage.

Also, is there an organised cohort of dedicated trackers?

I'd be interested in (virtually) meeting anyone with similar interests in my area. I live in Grafham which is a few miles west of Huntingdon (near the A1/A14 junction).

Incidentally, a good friend of mine, who is a full amateur radio licence holder living near Manchester, would probably be interested in getting involved too.

Many thanks.....Mike

Welcome!  I'm a bit out of date but a good place to start would be this page:

I built a LoRa tracker using the instructions given on Dave's page which worked well. However, other modes to LoRa are now being used which is where my knowledge ends.

It’s a worm hole, the deeper you go there’s no escape! I’m relatively new as well and loving the journey so far! It’s because of this project that I now own a foundation licence, and halfway through an intermediate course 🤣
I also now own about 5 Rasberi pi‘s, a few t beams  and loads of new gadgets! Let’s just say my wife’s not too impressed 🤣. It’s a good shout, maybe we should arrange a day out / networking opportunity for like minds to hang out, give us newbies a great chance to ask some questions, have a few beers and maybe a group launch.. would people be interested in something like that?

Kind Regards,

Gavin Gill

Hi John,

Many thanks for this information.

It makes me realise I need to look at Dave's site more thoroughly.

Thanks again.....Mike

Thanks for the friendly contact Gavin.

Yes. Definitely a "worm hole" as you say. I'll take my time to try to understand everything. I think I'll just start with an RTL dongle to keep it cheap.

I can't commit to meeting up just now, but it's a kind offer. I'll come back to you on that.

For me, the IT side is a challenge. It must be an age thing. Until recently, I thought a "Github" was a place that gits congregated.

Those dongles are easily overloaded by strong signals in other parts of the spectrum, but one of these SAW filters could improve your reception in the 70cm band:
