Anyone want to be on TV, also with their extended family? It actually sounds *potentially* quite good, as a project.

Subject: BBC series 'WOMEN' looking for young feminists

Dear Jess

I realise I may have been in touch previously about the BBC4 documentary series 'WOMEN' but we now have a slightly revised brief for our final episode so I thought I would get in touch once again in the hope you may be able to assist.  As you'll see below, I am urgently hoping to get in touch with some young politically active feminists in their 20s.

'WOMEN' is a three-part documentary series for BBC4 about feminism and its impact on contemporary women's lives. Episode 1 will map the ideology of women's liberation in the 1960s and throughout the 1970s, and evoke the urgency and passion of the early days of the movement.  Episodes 2 and 3 will look at the consequences of feminism, documenting the professional and domestic lives of women in Britain today, and assessing how the reality of their lives compares with the hopes and predictions of forty years ago.

The first film will outline the politics of feminism, and explain how impossibly constrained women's lives were until well into the last century. This film will feature four or five influential feminists from Britain and America.  Each of them would be asked to explain how they became involved in the feminist movement and to describe their ideological framework as well as the political battles they fought - both privately at home and on the broader political stage.

The second film will examine the lives of mothers today and examine the ways in which family life has been transformed. This film will feature six or seven mothers and their families, and will include working mothers and full-time mothers.

The third film is the one I am hoping you may be able to help me with.  We are hoping this film will feature an extended family, ideally including three generations of women, looking at how women's lives have changed over the generations.  We are specifically looking for a young  politically active feminist in her 20s, who would be willing to be the subject of a film, and whose siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces etc would also be willing to be featured.

I look forward to hearing from you if you are able to help.

Kind regards

Becky

I spoke to Ms Lomax on the phone this morning, she seemed very nice and
actually interested in feminism and how much is currently going on
within the movement. :o)

I spoke to Becky Lomax again this morning. She is looking for 'young'
feminists who would be willing to appear with their families,
specifically younger sisters/mums/cousins, regardless of whether the
family are feminist too. It sounds like they're doing something about
the influence of feminism. :o)

You can email her at Becky...@bbc.co.uk if you think you can help
or if you know anyone who might be interested.

It's all very specific, isn't it? I can't help but think they've got an idea in mind already, and are just trying to fit people into that box

I am wondering about that. She seems very feminist-friendly on the
phone, but I could be being duped. It's easy to do. ;oP

Well, perhaps it's not so much about her not being feminist-friendly, just that it's a bit of a weird kind of journalism (the idea generally being to report what you find). Perhaps the idea is to see how a feminist interacts with a 'typical' nuclear-type family? That could be interesting, I suppose...

Email reply I just received from Becky:

I'm a bit surprised that other young feminists feel the spec is too
specific. I have attached the document I sent to Jess, in it we're
simply asking for extended families, where one of the younger members
is a feminist. This was not intended to sound specific. In fact,
it's a very general request, and we haven't begun to pin down who the
families might be, or what their collective experience might
represent. The film will develop organically once we start talking to
the women who put themselves forward. So this is actually very
different from the way most tv is made - and we're in fact doing the
opposite of trying to fit people into a box.

I hope we haven't given the wrong impression or put anyone off. We
look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in being
involved or finding out more information about the series.
