Subject: Recycle your phone for Refuge - support women and children experiencing domestic violence
To: bham...@gmail.com

Hi,

I'm writing from the domestic violence charity Refuge, of which you may have heard. I want to tell you about our mobile phone recycling scheme, and hope that you might perhaps be able to pass on the details of the scheme to the members the Birmingham Feminists.

As I'm sure you know, the scale of domestic violence in this country is breathtaking: one woman in four will experience it at some point in her lifetime, and two women are killed by a current or former partner every week. Refuge saves lives, helping more than 1,000 women and children on any given day to escape domestic violence and build a safe and positive future. As well as providing emergency safe accomodation we also provide counselling and outreach services, give advice and advocacy support on pratical matters such as legal and housing rights, offer employment training to help women become independent, run campaigns to raise awareness, and also carry out research and lobbying to influence the governmental response to domestic violence.

We are asking supporters to recycle their old, unused mobile phone handsets in order to raise funds for Refuge. This is a great cost-free way to raise funds: it costs nothing to donate your old unused handsets; it's good for the environment; and for every handset sent in, we receive £3.50. Everyone's a winner! This soon adds up to a really great amount which really does make a huge difference to the women and children that we support.

There are currently over 53 million old and unused handsets lying around in UK households, so it's probably safe to assume that there are a few gathering dust in some of your members' drawers! Perhaps some of you received a new phone for Christmas and now have a spare one lying around. You can send your phones in by freepost to our partner Greener Solutions by addressing your envelope to Refuge, Greener Solutions, FREEPOST, LON17592, Mitcham, CR4 3UZ. Alternatively, you can download one of our freepost labels by clicking this link. We can also send you special freepost recycling envelopes – perhaps you would be able to distribute them among members, or have some available for members to take at meetings?

If you have any questions, or if you would be able to support us in this or any other way, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can contact me on harrie...@refuge.org.uk, or alternatively on 020 7395 7713.

With warmest wishes,

Harriet

I know quite a few of you have seen this already but the video which rebecca morden (from scary little girls) and i made is very close to the top of the current tv voting list.  if we can get to the top in the next 4 days and stay there we get £1000 (which would allow us to make loads more cool feminist videos) and our video would be shown on TV (probably).  so please take a look at it here when you have time:

http://current.com/items/89670508/i_hate_anti_wrinkle_cream_adverts.htm

and if you like it please vote for it (with the green "up" arrow next to it).  you have to register to vote but it's a very simple one-step process (no waiting for a confirm email or whatever).  and if you have friends/family/mailing lists who might appreicate it please forward and mention to them to vote because it would really help us!!  you are very very welcome to blog it if you would like.

thanks  kate
