Hi Friends,

2013 is Kenya's 50th Anniversary and as far as am concerned this year gives us a brilliant opportunity to rally around an issue; though temporary; that could bring Kenyans from all walks of life, political persuasions, ages, tribes, etc; together. I also think the government either does not understand the potential of this opportunity to unite Kenyans; especially when I remember what Moi did with the 25th anniversary. Or, Jubilee is concerned that holding 'Jubilee' National celebrations will open them to attacks from their rivals on how Kenya's 'Jubilee' is not just about the Jubilee Coalition. (Sakaja, Dennis?)

Whatever the case I want to suggest we help this process a long.

The last week or so I have been talking to media owners and personalities on an idea of regular (at least weekly) Tv and/or Radio Talk-Shows on #Ukenya, tied to Kenya turning 50. The idea is to start a series that will run all the way to 12/12/13; supported by private & public sector, as well as civil society. We then have different people talk about what it means to be Kenya, in a country that is turning 50. It would especially be interesting to compare and contrast younger post-indepedence/post-multi-party era Kenyans with the pre-independence generation; hear what each believes 'Nation-hood' means, and why, and their suggestions for the next 50 years.

Though these conversations would happen on Tv/Radio for a limited time, we believe they can easily be used to initiate similar conversations in homes and other social places. This would be a good thing, and help in what we are calling the search to get 'Ukenya'. We can start by tapping from the diverse experiences in and around this group; the various backgrounds (business, civil society, political, religious, trade unions, media, etc), to start the conversations at the right level, fresh and current. We can also mix & match ages, bring in entertainers to attract the youth to the show, etc.

The working name for this idea is 'UKenya@50; Conversations on Nationhood'. Ideally we are suggesting at least 10 Tv shows, which could run from the 1st week of October 2013 to the 1st week of December 2013; ending just before the December 12th National 50th Anniversary Celebrations. Radio shows can start even earlier so as to run longer, and we can have a lot more interviews a week as they are a lot easier to make happen.

President Uhuru asked for help him bring this country together :) ... this is my 2 cents in that process; leveraging this 'Kenyan Birthday' year into something that helps us discuss our #Ukenya. Let me know whether it makes sense; how best to script the shows; and whether it will push this conversation along, as Kenya turns 50

Cheers

Hi Ngunjiri

Very good idea and lets go  ahead with that plan. In my view one of the greatest achievements of Ukenya would be to open the culture of open dialog among Kenyas with the view of looking at our past critically with the intentions of shaping a better future for our Nation.

I support this idea and you can enrich it by sometimes having a panel of our Ukenya team on TV to discuss specific issues.

Regards

Hon. Abdikadir

Hi Ngunjiri,

I'll give you more solid feedback later in the week on your proposal. As I add my support to this, I'd like to ask if you would be ok combining your idea with a few other initiatives that are similar & we see if we can drive a strong conversation with less duplication.

Your proposal for 10 focused, intergenerational conversations on nationhood is good & I feel has a strength that other proposals I'm privy too do not have yet these others are about to roll off. What do you think?

Looks like an interesting idea. However, if your targeted start date is October 1, there's a very limited window to get the program off the ground - at least from a production perspective.

Alternately, you could make this a guerilla campaign and take it online. Buy/Rent/Acquire studio time - record the conversations and put them up for public consumption via Youtube, Vimeo, FB and Twitter. Once in the latter, if the content is engaging, it will spread.

I really like that idea; will cut down our costs to just what we need for shooting ... & we can build up the conversations online & allow them to build their own following as they provoke discussion across ... great idea Ramah!

Hey,
This is a good engagement pre and post the 50 years celebration and I hope there is a way of encouraging other people to do at least one such in their localities. I like the online mobilising aspect while we also need to be careful coz sometimes online remains just that ..online. However, having this discussion go viral will have some impact.
