Friends,

In an attempt to be pro-active on the issue of growing insecurity in the country and help in the fight against terrorism,; and in light of past conversations on the challenges of #NyumbaKumi, an idea that has been introduced from within this group that we are calling 'My Brother's Keeper'.

#MyBrothersKeeper is about developing a social movement that starts from an online platform (www.mybrotherskeeper.co.ke), that will sensitize Kenyans on the need to be vigilant at all times, and encourage them to share information and security concerns, make suggestions/learn from each other and the government; etc; all in an attempt to influence, affect and/or be affected, by issues around security that are common to urban centre dwellers. We expect that the platform will be a place to flag threats, raise concerns, give suggestions, learn general security vigilance, etc. It will borrow/build from the concepts that make existing social groupings successful; eg Chamas, Welfare Associations, Neighborhood Watch(es), etc.

It is still very much at 'working draft' level: nothing firm exists that cannot be changed/adjusted/ammended. We therefore invite criticisms, suggestions, ideas or anything else that will add value to this. We also, especially, invite VOLUNTEERS to be part of the into the small group that will work on this.

Cheers.
Ngunjiri

...looking forward to "mysisterskeeper" :) That title in itself is not inclusive

Sophie, I believe you're onto something. Perhaps "glass ceiling..."

Okay .. I didn't come up with the phrase 'my-brothers-keeper' .. or determine it means watching out for your neighbour (man or woman!) .. so I want to run away from the impending gender debate :-)

Does the idea make (any) sense?

Ngunjiri, discrimination happens in all ways and we can not ignore one aspect (gender) that affects 50% of the population and still claim to be inclusive. So you can never run away from gender debate.  The same way we are struggling to be inclusive of different ethnic groups is the same way we are inclusive of women and men. Unless this initiative is specifically for men then you have wrong from the word go. In fact yuo mention "neghbour' that is inclusive Ukenya- that is inclusive...brother...that is not inclusive. But if it is meant to be men watching out for other men, then you are already alienating part of the population.

Thanks for sharing this, Ngunjiri.

The principle of the initiative is spot on and I volunteer to participate. I'm sure this insightful team will overcome the naming hurdle and ensure gender balance. 😉

My best to all.

Okay Sophie; first problem with the idea clearly is the name. Can we suggest another (better) one? Can we also go into the concept itself; is it something that could add value to other existing efforts? how? Etc ..

Hello Ukenya,

Since we are here, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sophie for bringing up an important concern.

The gentleman in the link below brings the option of opting out (what our brother Ngunjiri attempted to do) of this conversation to perspective :

http://willthisbeaproblem.com/2014/05/18/men-sexism-and-denial/

Secondly, how will this platform be different from the endless Facebook groups and whatsapp groups that share security vigilance?

Kind Regards,
Dr. Wambui Waithaka

Friends,

After the conversation on the gender insensitivity of 'mybrotherskeeper' Nicholas Muchiri has adjusted the campaign identity to 'Majirani.co.ke' ..

Will continue to keep you posted on this, & we welcome additional volunteers to run with this idea. Stella & everyone else who has indicated their intention to help, we'll revert shortly; especially around a proposed meeting with Mr Kaguthi.

Dr Wambui thanks for sharing this. I can not even add more to this, just to reiterate "we got to talk about it".
Asante.
