RTC for older version of uKenbak-1

I've lately acquired an older version of the uKenbak-1, the one with the 3d-printed case. This one was apparently not yet equipped with an RTC. The instructions say: "You can ignore the 8-pin socket for the 'DS1307' location. That is for possible future use."

My question is: Will the RTC work in this guy if I provide the DS1307 and use the original software version from Mark Wilson's Github (which seems to be made for this RTC version)?

It won't work just by plugging in a DS1307.  It's the main reason I went with the RTC module.  All of the necessary ancillary parts are right on the module.
