I have uploaded a new version of Ukelele. This is a minor update, bringing one new feature, one bug fix, and updates to some internals.
  • There is now an option to indicate that the icon for a keyboard layout is a template icon. This requires a black and white icon, and it will automatically switch in macOS 12.4 (Monterey) and later.
  • Fixes a bug in replacing a modifier set via undo.
  • Update language registry to 2022-03-02, and update manual.
It should be available through software update within Ukelele, or from https://software.sil.org/ukelele/.

This is awesome. First I didn't see the template checkbox. But now it works! Thanks!

Same here, but when I made the Keyboard Layout Collection window a little wider, the column heading became more visible.
Maybe John can set the default width of that window a bit higher now?
But I must say I have no idea how the widths of that window and the columns inside it are determined.
The video first shows how it opens initially, then what happens when I drag the width narrower, then back to the same, then wider. Weird!

By the way, the update in Monterey went completely smooth.

The joys of autolayout! There are multiple things going on here, some of which are beyond my control. macOS always saves your windows in the size and position that they were, so any default size is not applied to a window that was open when you last quit Ukelele (unless you delete the preferences).

The other factors are some of the mysteries involved in Apple's implementation of autolayout, which is the magic that makes windows behave somewhat sensibly when they are resized. I'd been battling with that particular window for a while, and had finally found a way to silence warnings that led to worse things — I would ask Xcode to reset to suggested constraints, but that immediately brought a different set of warnings and moved things from how I'd set them up. So, I deleted all constraints and set them up again, which got rid of the warnings, but it may have led to the odd issues with the table column size, which hasn't been easy to deal with.

Anyway, I'm on holiday for the next few days, so I'll experiment further when I get back to it.

By the way, the update in Monterey went completely smooth.
I'm glad that it worked reliably this time. Remembering all the steps is difficult when I only go through them every few months.

It seems programming macOS is less an acquired skill than a supernatural power that can make a puppy behave…

Re. preparing a new update: I make checklists for everything… I know I need them!

Happy holidays!
