Hello,
I am an Occupational Therapist, working with a student who has a MacBook Air. We are exploring use of Half-QWERTY using Keyb, which is working very well. However, the student uses their left hand, meaning they need to reach to the far right to hit 'return'.
The Half-QWERTY uses spacebar as a modifier, so the student holds spacebar + letter for the mirrored letter on the right side (ie spacebar + f = j). The student is grade 12 and very good with tech, so I am not concerned about carryover to future computers, as he will be able to set it up once shown how.
Is there a way to use the spacebar as a modifier in Ukelele? I'd like to create a combo that is spacebar + left shift = return. I'm not clear how to do that as spacebar is not listed under modifiers.
We are open to alternatives, but are focusing on Half-QWERTY right now (along with dictation). If anyone knows how to do this in Ukelele or another free program, that would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Lisa

Hello

Excuse my ignorance:
what is Keyb? an abbreviation? an app?
what keyboard layout is used?
space bar is not a current modifier key, but I understand it already works like this there?
what operating system is there?
the student uses the left hand only, and needs a key layout for this specific use?

"Keyb" is a macos app that is basically a software version of half-QWERTY. It is simple to install and run (just check the box for half-QWERTY, uncheck for normal layout). It is US English (macbook air). I have been able to make it work since I posted through Karabiner-Elements. Thank you, if there is a way to close this post, that can be done. :)

Correct, Karabiner is the solution, not UKELELE.
