Good evening all,

I downloaded this app earlier today so I could create my own custom keyboard. It actually worked out and I like it a lot!

I ran into two minor problems, however (unfortunately, technology likes a real pain-in-the-neck sometimes XD). Whenever I hit the space bar, it does not click a space for me, so I cannot use the space bar with the keyboard. Also, I am stuck on how to create dead keys.

If anybody can please help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Hi Tamas,

I think you have created your custom keyboard using the Ukelele command "New Keyboard Layout…"

Usually, it’s easier and better to activate a built-in keyboard layout that works more or less like you want yours and then do this:
• Choose the command "New Keyboard Layout Collection".
• Click the + sign at the bottom of the new window and pick the option "Capture Current Input Source".
That will take care of all the important stuff "under the hood".
• You can then double-click the new copy of the currently active keyboard layout and start editing.

Dead keys are a concept one has to get used to a bit.
Coming back to the previous point: most built-in keyboard layouts have some dead keys, so you can get more familiar with dead keys by creating a copy of an existing layout and looking inside Ukelele how it works.

But to answer your question specifically:
To change a standard (blue) key/character into a (red) "dead key", just click it, then click the "Create" toolbar icon.
Please note that you have to hold down the desired modifier keys (Shift, Option, …) while clicking on the key.
(This is because "dead keys" are actually just "dead characters": the result of pressing the same key but with different modifier combinations is not affected.)

Of course, that’s only the beginning: next, you’ll be asked to specify which dead-key state to use for it…

Have you checked the PDF manual? It’s available over the Help menu.

Please report your progress :-)
