Hi,

I'm new to Ukelele, I am trying to create/edit a keyboard layout for Japanese.

I want it to work like the standard Japanese keyboard layout already available on Mac, by this I mean that I want to be able to input romanized (English) text which will automatically change to hiragana, katakana or kanji based on a dropdown list of potential options. However, whenever I try to do this by importing the hiragana keyboard layout, the resultant keyboard only allows me to type in English.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Thanks!

You can’t do this with Ukelele.  The input methods for Japanese and Chinese are different animals entirely from the kind of layouts Ukelele is designed to create/modify.

They are more like the “custom input method” system provided by Apple.

but I doubt even this would let you do what you want.

The best alternative to Apple’s Japanese IM, if that is what you are looking for, is
