Dear colleagues,

I hope you have all received news of the closure of the UK based operations of Sabin Foundation Europe (SFE) by now. My last day in the office will be tomorrow, and I will be leaving SFE officially on the 30 September 2017. As many of you know SFE’s UK operations were largely supported by a grant held by the Global Network for NTDs, an advocacy initiative based within the Sabin Vaccine Institute, which ended last year. A record of the history of Global Network’s achievements across resource mobilization; the END7 campaign and its grant beneficiaries including Sightsavers International; Special Envoy Program; national, regional and global advocacy campaigns to mention a few, are now publicly available here: http://www.sabin.org/program-area/global-network-ntds

I wanted to say a personal ‘thank you’ to you all. It has been a great pleasure and honour working with such a diverse group of leaders, experts, champions and advocates over the last four and a half years! It’s hard to believe how fast the last few years have gone and how much the global health space has moved in terms of national and global agendas. Especially with the inclusion of NTDs at the G7, G20 and 2030 agendas and a new DFID commitment to NTDs over the next 5 years thanks to contributions and efforts by this group.

I wish you all the best as you move forward with policy advocacy plans in the UK and wider.

After my departure from SFE I will be continuing as part-time Coordinator of the APPG on Malaria & NTDs and look forward to continuing to work with you under the APPMG partnership. My contact email is aparna...@parliament.uk and personal email is aparna....@gmail.com if you would like to stay in touch.

Warm regards,

Aparna

As you are an important stakeholder and partner, I would like to share the news that due to funding and strategic shifts, Sabin Foundation Europe’s Board of Trustees recently made the decision to close UK operations as of 30 September 2017.

Since its inception in 2011, Sabin Foundation Europe (SFE) has been aligned with the vision and goals of its US-based sister organization the Sabin Vaccine Institute. UK operations to date have been predominantly funded by a grant to advocate for neglected tropical disease (NTD) control and elimination through drug treatment programmes; this grant funding concluded in the spring of 2016. SFE has utilized the policy advocacy expertise of UK staff to advance Sabin’s broader work on global health across vaccine access and research.

The Sabin Vaccine Institute (Institute) recently launched a new strategy to realign its efforts with an evolving global health landscape and redefined its focus on vaccines, tackling key areas of unmet need in immunization. The Institute’s mission is to make vaccines more accessible, enable innovation and expand immunization across the globe. The SFE Board of Trustees wish to thank the Institute for their partnership on our joint achievements, particularly in our work to control and eliminate NTDs over the years.

The SFE Board of Trustees and staff are proud of its impactful engagement and history of advocating for the control and elimination of NTDs through drug treatment programmes, NTD research and development, and increased access to vaccines. Over the last six years:

  • In collaboration with the Institute and other organizations, SFE has helped build a movement in the UK and across Europe that has succeeded at bringing several NTDs to the brink of elimination, mobilizing nearly £130 million to fund treatment programs, generating political and public will among endemic and donor countries.

  • SFE is proud to have played a significant role in NTDs and immunization advocacy efforts in the UK. Through policy and advocacy support to the UK Coalition on NTDs, All – Party Parliamentary Group on Malaria and NTDs, the EU Product Development Partnership Coalition and the UK Gavi Civil Society group, SFE has played a key role in the creation and mobilization of political will and parliamentary champions to eliminate NTDs and increase global access to life saving vaccines.
  • Utilizing research and evidence from the Institute’s programs and through effective policy advocacy collaboration with UK partners, global health networks and direct engagement with the Department for International Development, SFE has supported the mobilization of UK Government leadership and increased political will for NTD efforts and continued EU member state commitment to research and development for new global health tools. In 2011, the UK Government announced a five-fold increase to its NTD budget, followed by a doubling of NTD investments in 2017 to £360 million through 2022. In 2014 and 2015 both the Netherlands and Germany respectively renewed their commitment to funding global health research, increasing support to product development partnerships. NTD treatment and research into new tools were prioritized within the 2015 G7 Leaders Declaration and NTDs for the first time are now included within a set of Global Goals for development launched in 2016.
  • With leadership from the SFE Board of Trustees, SFE supported the creation of the Sabin City Group, a movement of global corporate citizens from UK private sector working to raise awareness and public will to end NTDs. Since 2013 members of the Sabin City Group have raised over £50,000 to support NTD treatment programmes in India and Guyana.

Since SFE was established, the fight against NTDs has accelerated at a historic pace. In a recent report, the World Health Organization announced that more people are receiving NTD treatment than ever before in history – an estimated one billion people each year. Several NTDs, including lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) and onchocerciasis (river blindness), are on track to be eliminated, and for others, new tools and strategies are in the works to accelerate progress. We believe there is a strong network of global health organizations and partners on hand to carry this work forward.

Together we have achieved a great deal. As an important stakeholder for our work, we would like to thank you for your partnership and collaboration with Sabin Foundation Europe.

Hi Aparna

Thank you for all the energy, creativity, and leadership you brought to the influencing work of the coalition.

Congratulations on all your successes during your time at Sabin and thank you for the many contributions you have made to the UKCNTD, from strategizing DFID engagement, to leading UKCNTD input at the NHM event and influencing  IDC inquiries (just to note a few!).

You will certainly be missed. But we will look forward to continuing to work with you through the APPMG.

Best wishes

Helen
