I am the one who cannot make up his mind just after Birmingham - which one
do I take?

I never remember to reset the mileage to see which is shorter? Destination
is (say) Paddington or Hammersmith. I believe the answer is depends on
traffic and/or time of the day. You either sit in traffic at Cricklewood
then big time at Kilburn (or thread through via Queens Pk etc) or take your
chances with M25 and M40/M4.

If you are coming from Scotland why not avoid Birmingham altogether?

One way is A50 from Trentham on M6 to Kegworth on the M1.

Another is take A449 from Stafford South to the M5 above Worcester, then
A419 from Gloucester to M4 at Swindon, then M4. Sometimes A329(M) via
Bracknell onto M3 can be quicker than M4.

It's like the Irishman said, I wouldn't start from here.

Why not just stay on the M40 when it turns into the A40? Saves having
to touch the grim M25. This should bring you into London at Marylebone
(Baker Street)...

How about taking yourself off the road and trying the train for a change -
you might have a pleasant surprise! :o)

The question is - Virgin Trains into Euston or Chiltern Trains into
Marylebone.....

That's funny. The A40 and the A5 don't meet - except at Marble Arch. They
certainly don't meet in the midlands.

Peter,
You quite clearly have never been on a train...

It's cheaper to drive (I tried a 3 month season ticket), & you will
be lucky to get a seat.

And there's more: In addition to being bloody expensive, most trains on the
route in question (I'm talking Virgin here) are unreliable, dirty, slow, and
bloody uncomfortable. I went to Paris on Eurostar recently, and the train
was clean, very fast, and had a superb ride, but we won't be seing anything
like this in the rest of the UK.

Use your cars!

W.
