Anybody know the composition of the UK driving licence number.
I know it consists of the drivers DOB but what are the other numbers ?

Thanks,

Brian.

AFAIK the driver No. on a UK driving licence is made up as follows:

for Miss Amanda Beth Smith dob 30th April 1961

SMITH/654301/AB9ZX

Section 1 = First 5 letters of surname
Section 2 = The first and last numbers are the year of birth ie 61
The 4th and 5th digits are the date of birth ie

30th. The 2nd and 3rd digits are the month of
birth adding a 5 to the second digit if the
licence holder is female.
Section3 = The first 2 digits are the intials followed by 3 random

check digits. Maybe if a person had three names

all three initials would be shown in this
section with 2 random check digits.

eg, JONES/701231/PA9AX

first bit is first 5 letters from surname

middle bit is your whole birthday jumble up.
in this case 23rd January 1972 (23-01-71)
the month number, the day number and the two digits from the year separated and
place either side of the other four digits.

the last section will be up to 3 of your initials followed by what appears to be
a random 2 or 3 digits/letters, depending on wether you have 2 or 3 forenames.
These letters/numbers actually have a particular meaning (i used to have a list
but cannot find it) and refer to wether the licence is a duplicate issue (in
this case the code would become PA8AX, the `8` being the operative), for example
or wether you have been banned in the past or wether any special medical
restrictions are in force etc.

No (a propos your last comment). I have three names, and only the first
two initials are shown.

https://www.drivercheck.co.uk/driver-licence-information/photocard-driving-licence-explained/
says:

PEARS (first five letters of surname)

Digits 1 and 5 are 7 and 8 (year)
Digits 2 and 3 are 5 and 9 (month 09, but with 50 added because you are
female)
Digits 4 and 5 are 2 and 7 (day 27)

Px or P9 (where x is your second initial if you have one, 9 if not)

yyy (three checksum digits)

So yours would be PEARS759278Pxyyy

If your name is patricia pearson why is your email trishlowther?

Seems to me you're trying to find out someones license number to cause
them trouble or carry out some sort of scam so I suggest you go swivel on it.

Trish is a common abbreviation of Patricia. Lowther could be a previous
surname, if she's changed her name (eg, on marriage) since getting the
email account.

Doesn't someone asking for their own license number on a usenet newsgroup
strike you as just a little bit odd?

I worked out the Trish/Patricia thing immediately. I suppose it is plausible
that the email address could date from before a change of surname; I bet
Gmail can't change the email address of an existing account. She may well
have kept the old address if she carried on using her maiden name after
marriage, even if her official name on driving licence, passport etc was
changed.

One thing I noticed about the coding for the licence number is that it can't
handle two people with the same name born on the same day: John Arthur Smith
and John Alfred Smith both born on 1 January 1990 would have the same
number. Maybe that's what the final three computer-generated characters are
used for - disambiguation as well as just checksum.

They are disambiguation. The website cited earlier is correct as to the
format of the part that is derived from the personal details, but the
remaining characters are for disambiguation, not a checksum.

I'm not sure where the idea that they are a checksum came from, but a
quick bit of Googling reveals several websites that have identical text
to that on the one cited - even down to the same example licence - so it
looks as if someone, somewhere was the first to makwe that wrong
conclusion and then it's been copied and pasted around the web.

Certainly my first thought was why not just look at the licence?

Quite. It seems however there are some credulous people on here however.
No wonder scammers have such success.
