Yesterday, Stagecoach offered 41 million pounds to the
employee shareholders of GMS Buses (Greater Manchester
Buses South) for the company, effectively buying each
one pound share for 10 pounds, giving a 10000 pounds
profit for each employee.

The Unions and Management have recommeded that the
bid is accepted (bus takeover bids usually are).

GMS Buses have a 700 vehicle fleet, which should increase
the size of Stagecoach (in terms of numbers of vehicles
owned) by nearly 10%, and are the largest operator in South
Manchester.

Stagecoach have been very busy recently, as only last week
they purchased the Exeter-based Devon General and Bayline from
Harry Blundred's Transit Holdings (Blundred intends now to
concentrate on his Australian operations). Also there were
angry scenes in East Lancashire a few days ago when Stagecoach offered
to purchase the council owned Burnley and Pendle Transport, which
is deep in Stagecoach Ribble territory

The purcase of GMS added to Ribble increases what is already the largest
market share in Lancashire.

What about Thames Tranist (and Oxford/Heathrow tube), Blue/Red Admiral,
Docklands Transit etc?

Just as long as they don't do what they did to Darlington.

interesting tactic by stagecoach... not so long ago they sold
their manchester operation to Finglands ..... maybe they miss
operating in Manchester and want to go back.....
if i recall correctly Stagecoach tried to buy GMS before when
it was sold by GMPTE

>The Unions and Management have recommeded that the

who wouldn;t ..... all that money...... bet they have to
repaint the whole fleet though..... can;t have stagecoach buses
going round with out stripes on can we (except in london).

stage coach only have about 7000 vehicles ??? not that many
considering that some operators have over 500 on their own
GMS obviously and i believe the Shires (owned by british bus) have well
over 500 vehicles themselves......

>Stagecoach have been very busy recently,

when have they ever not been busy......
at the present rate most of the independant operators
in the country will be under stagecoach ownership unless
one of the other bus groups buys them.... its the only way they
can survive these days......

as only last week
>they purchased the Exeter-based Devon General and Bayline from
>Harry Blundred's Transit Holdings (Blundred intends now to

i assume they bought only bayline and devon general......
does blundred still own red/blue admiral, docklands transit and
thames transit then ??? or is he after buyers for those too.....
in the case of thames transit i can anticipate the Go Ahead group
making a healthy offer that way they can then merge it with
the Oxford Bus Company and get rid of the bus war currently
waging in oxford

well... you can;t have stagecoach having competitors can you.....
if an operator gets in its way or appears to be getting more passengers
then you buy the operator so that you get all those passengers as well....

Maybe it will be worth it just to get rid of that horrible orange!
Even better get the drivers new uniforms instead of that lovely brown acrylic!

Yes, the orange should return to the orange of the SELNEC days (or
even the slightly revised version introduced just after when they
discovered the original faded).

However! The colout that should never have been introduced was the
yukky brown colour, used for the bottom panels. This butchered what
had been an attractive and smart livery (esp. when bus was clean).

Is there a newsgroup where buses are discussed more thoroughly?

Ta-ta from a Mancunian (person not bus) bus enthusiast.

Tony.

Alas, no. Some of us have discussed it but we don't think there'd be
enough traffic (even in Manchester!)

What's wrong with Mancunians, I think they look great! Better than a
Selnec standard anyway, if not quite as nice as a panoramic 33 foot
Atlantean/Alaexander with two doors and nearside stairs.

Howay the lads!

Thames Transit and Docklands Transit have been retained by Harry
Blundred's ex-wife (part of the reason for his move to Australia).
Blue & Red Admiral have been sold to FirstBus.

"People who know" recon that they sold their 192 to Finglands to avoid
being investigated (again) by the MMC. By selling out first, they had no
existing interests in the area.

Mrs. Blundred, there are some people from Gateshead who would like to
talk to you...

The employees voted yesterday on the Stagecoach takeover and the majority were
in favour of it.

From the opinions given on the news, most did not want to be taken over, but
would prepare to be given 10,000 pounds for it now rather than keep the
company and be run off the road by Stagecoach at a later date!

So Noel, that means Burnley & Pendle will get swallowed By Stagecoach
Ribble in the same way as Chesterfield Transport has been by Stagecoach
East Midland?

Yorkshire Traction's MD is on the record as saying there will still be a
few hundred bus operators at the turn of the century, at this rate it
looks more like there'll only be one :-(.
