Do the hazard warning lights on a car have to work, in order to pass
an MOT?

When were hazard warning lights introduced as compulsory items?

Yes, They must work (including the warning light).

IIRC the legislation was introduced around 1986.
I can't remember when this actually had to be implemented, however
if your car was registered after Jan 1 1990 then you definitely
need to have them working.

Source: looking at the Construction and Use regs at my local library
approx 2 or 3 years ago, as it applied to my situation - only the
LH indicators flashed when the hazards were turned on. Indicators
were OK - replaced indicator/hazards/lamp switch cluster to fix.
(got it 2nd hand at the local ford breakers for half list price)

If they are fitted they have to work regardless of when the compusary
date was. I think it is 1986? but wouldn't swear to that.

So even if you have a 1980 car and before the compulsory date, if you
have warning lights, they gotta work.

ISTR they're one of these things which, if fitted, must be
operational, even if fitting was not actually mandatory at
the time of first registration of the vehicle...

My copy of the C&U regs isn't to hand, but ISTR some time
in the mid-1970's. My 1973 Escort didn't have them, but my
1966 Mini and 1979 Cortina did.

I have a car which was first registered in 1979. I believe the
factory fitted hazard warning lights as standard.

Would I be able to remove the switch & lamp from the dashboard, and
claim that the car was first registered before HWL were mandatory?

This also rings true re car fog lights. The switch on my dash was playing up
so I took it in for a service at the same time as the MOT was due. The
service picked up on the fact that the switch was faulty. The garage didn't
have the part in stock, thus it failed its MOT on the switch which was
delivered and fitted the next day.

It pays to know the regs.

A garage tried to fail my '79 Caddy for not having fog lights, he was
obviously under the impression that since it was registered and
running on a W plate (81) that it needed them but after he checked his
MOT book or whatever it is tester use it was passed.

Sorry Jeff I can't help you there. I would presume that if a car was
designed to have them then it would fail regardless but if you did a
good job of removing the switch and the examiner didn't know the car
should have hazzards then you could get away with it.
