Hi all,

How often do aeroplanes use the car/plane level crossing on Eastchurch Road
in Heathrow? I've never seen it used, so does it only happen at night? Is
there any way of finding out in advance when it will be used?

I've been held up at this crossing twice in the last 3 years, mid-morning
on both occasions, including once for a Concorde trundling past very
slowly.

You will find they store all the Concorde's in the far back of the hangers.
Nearer to the road it's usually a standing area for large aircraft (747s).
But it's basically BA large aircraft maintenance hanger.

I used to work at Heathrow and drive along Eastchurch Road at about 08.00 -
a Concorde was always being towed across the road at that time. Presumably
this was the plane forming BA001 - the 10.30 Concorde service to New York
which we would always go watch take off (a thrilling and incredible sight no
matter how many times witnessed).

How about the Hovercraft level crossing at Lee-on-Solent, on the Solent
estuary opposite Isle of Wight.
The crossing crosses over to HMS Daedalus.

Don't know if it's used anymore.
I think they are trying to setup a Hovercraft museum there.
I assume it was used when the military were developing military hovercraft.
There are some big & impressive old hovercraft there, visible from the road.

If anyone knows if this Hovercraft level crossing is ever used, I'd be
interested ??

It is used quite a lot but only on demand as service requires. Mostly you
would only see planes going/coming from the maintenance hangers. Oh you
might see Concord at about 8:00am weekday mornings. It passes through on
its way to terminal four for the morning service to NYC.

Trouble is, there is no parking there at all, you will get moved on if you
stop and wait for a plane to turn up and use the barrier (unless you are
Prince Andrew in a hurry to get to the Golf, in which case you would
obviously be above the law) You might get away with parking at the Hatton
Cross station or in one of the side streets across the other side of the
A30, where all the plane spotters park, its then only a short walk to this
area. Alternatively you could use the Long stay carpark just up the road
from this crossing.

Hope this helps

The crossing is still there ...

The last time it was used was (IIRC) when the former "hoverspeed"
Dover-calais craft were retired and stored there. The slipway used to be
used frequently when the RN had an SAR Hovercraft or two based at Daedelus -
this ended before I moved away from the area (c1993? I moved in '96).

For Eastchurch Rd, I couldn't think of a more convenient spot

I seem to recall that there is a tank crossing on one of the roads
near Lincoln.

There are triangular warning signs with a picture of a tank.

Has anyone mentioned the aircraft / railway level crossing at Filton
(on the line to Avonmouth)?

Drive from Salisbury to Marlborough (A354) - there's tons of these signs -
and yes, you *do* get stopped by some "junior" who stands in the middle of
the road and waits. And waits. Eventually his mates go flying across the
road in a Landrover. He looks sheepish; then runs after said landrover.

Nothing to do with London, so stopped.

Quite a few on Salisbury Plain as well.

I thoroughly recommend taking the Picc to Hatton Cross. The plane
crossing is only a ten-minute walk at most up Eastchurch Road. If you
go on a little farther you end up at the east end of runway 27R; and
if you turn left out of Hatton Cross and head towards the far end of
the station car park you'll find yourself at the east end of runway
27L. Depending on which way they're flying, you get some pretty nice
views of planes landing/taking off.

Getting a bit off-topic now, isn't it?

Given the low usage of both railway and the airport I think the question is mostly academic.
