We have recently had a competition at work which encourages people to
travel to and from work for one day by any mode of transport other
than the car.

Points were awarded per mile of travel, e.g. 1.5 per mile for car
share, 2 per mile for bus/train, 5 per mile for cyling, an 10 per mile
for walking.
It also highlighted the problems experience by trying to use
alternative modes of transport, e.g. inconvenience travel times, high
fares, etc.
