REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the following changes
in the uk.* Usenet hierarchy:

delete newsgroup uk.transport.ferry

Newsgroup line:
uk.transport.ferry UK ferry news and discussion

*** ALL DISCUSSION MUST TAKE PLACE IN UK.NET.NEWS.CONFIG ***

This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.
Further procedural details are given below.

RATIONALE: uk.transport.ferry

It has long been custom within uk.* to check for groups that are not
being used and then to remove them. By doing this we keep the number of
dead groups down increasing the chances that someone stumbling across a
group will find it useful.

An analysis of the posts to uk.transport.ferry from 2013-11-29 to
2014-11-29 has shown that there were no posts in this period.

It is not the intention to remove any groups that are, or people
believe will be, useful going forward. If you are a user of the group
and feel it should remain then please reply to this and join the debate
on uk.net.news.config so I know not to press ahead with this.

CHARTER:
uk.transport.ferry

This newsgroup is intended to give ferry enthusiasts, users and people
who work in the industry alike latest news on what is happening around
the UK. This news is otherwise hard to come across, and the newsgroup
would allow people to communicate developments with each other in an
efficient way

As well as direct news, discussion topics on the subject of past, present
or possible future operations or ferries would be welcome.

Discussion topics

Discussion topics should be limited to ferry services serving the United
Kingdom, both within the British Isles and also continental Europe.

The following are considered off-topic:

* matters of general transport interest without reference to ferries -
this should be posted in uk.transport

* matters relating to shipping other than ferries

* matters relating to 'fixed-link' traffic without reference to ferry
services

* posts in languages other than English without translation

* personal abuse/ flames

* cross-posting to more than two other newsgroups

Binary Files

Only plain text is permitted. No binary files, HTML text or similar are
permitted.

Advertising Policy

All commercial advertisements (including those advertising for jobs) are
not permitted. However personal advertisements for goods or services
related to ferries are allowed providing they are no greater than 20
lines.

END CHARTER

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of
the process, any potential problems with the proposal should be raised
and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 10
days, starting from when this RFD is posted to uk.net.news.announce
(i.e. until December 12th) after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be
posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it.
Alternatively, the proposal may proceed by the fast-track method. Please
do not attempt to vote until this happens.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the "Guidelines for Group Creation
within the UK Hierarchy" as published regularly in uk.net.news.announce
and is available from http://www.usenet.org.uk/guidelines.html (the UK
Usenet website). Please refer to this document if you have any questions
about the process.
