Company Profile

John Holdsworth & Co Ltd was founded in 1822 and since then has been
manufacturing cloth on the site of the present factory complex. From
this tradition - as one of the founders of the Yorkshire woollen
industry - has sprung a modern dynamic business which has become the
world market leader in textiles for transport industries - primarily
buses, coaches and railways.

In its long history quality and service have been the hallmark of the
company and although manufacturing methods have changed over the
years, standards have been consistently maintained and, where
possible, improved.

The predominant use of wool has produced and ensured a product
superior to all others, entirely suited to the unique demands of the
transport industry; fabrics which offer the ultimate in comfort, even
in the most extreme conditions of service.

Technical expertise has ensured that materials, yarns, dyestuffs and
finishing processes are continually researched and developed providing
efficient and cost-effective solutions, meeting rigorous international
requirements such as flammability and wear specifications and
providing full co-ordination of upholstery, walls, ceilings and all
interior furnishing needs.

Holdsworth fabrics occupy a predominant position in public transport
systems such as the former British Rail, London Transport, railways,
passenger transport and transit systems, bus and coach operators
throughout Europe, the USA, Canada and Australasia.

The original post is over 17 years old. The URL it mentions is no longer valid. And the company went into liquidation over a decade ago. I don't think anyone's going to get a current price list now.

'Tis one of the problems with low volume groups like this one. But it does mean that some interesting topics resurface from time to time. Just a pity that decent moquette doesn't seem to be easily available in the UK now. I wonder where the steam railways get their material from, when they're refurbishing old carriages.

Interesting. The site says that "Our fabrics are manufactured by Camira Ltd. (formerly John Holdsworth Ltd.)". Which gives some hope that the Holdsworth archives and samples have survived.

I don’t know if you have managed to look at the Camira website but they do
have some images in sections dedicated to rail and road transport, mainly
modern but they do show a couple of patterns called Tilling.
I’m intrigued by the pattern on a small rectangular cushion we have at home
that was made by a relative of the other half some time in the 50’s . I’m
led to believe she worked for Portsmouth Corporation Transport on repairing
the upholstery and the cushions were made from offcuts of material and
leather and distributed amongst relations and friends, whether this was
done with permission as perk or a small fee or a clandestine operation she
is no longer around to ask. It doesn’t match the patterns used on a couple
of PCT preserved buses I have looked at so far including the trolley at The
East Anglia Museum.
