Had to replace my failed Gigaset S685IP (at work) today with an N300a IP
First impressions are it's vastly improved. No lag on the web
interface. Also now supports 3 x consecutive IP calls and pstn call at
once, but the most noticeable thing is using G722 codec.
I'd previously disabled it in the past as it gave a horrible tinny sound
however setting the N300a IP to set codecs for high bandwidth (starting
with G722) rather than disabling G722 as is the norm, the quality is way
better. Still a little "toppy" (tinny) on the ear but dialling out to
various suppliers gave a far better sound than ever before. Most
specifically differentiating between similar sounding letters "S" and
"F" for example. Now whether this is because more businesses are using
VOIP or whether BT 21CN is supporting/passing G722 or who knows what
other reason but my partner on her first call to "York Fitness"
commented on the line being much clearer and she could hear quiet noises
in the background very clearly rather than the previous attempts a few
years back which came back with "sounds awful like a robot or talking in
a tin box"
My first call to another supplier also while slightly "toppy" was very
clear and I had to turn the earpiece volume down.
Same handsets as previously. So I'm now going to go home and re-activate
it on the S685IP at home to see if it's a network
improvement/compatibility or just that the latest gigaset box with
faster processes etc is making it "work"
All in all I'd say if you haven't tried G722 for a while then give it
another shot as it appears to be working for me at work to other
businesses at least.
Oh, I have changed all my phone lines to Zen Internet from BT and as
they have a VOIP service I wonder whether that's helping?
Cheers
Pete
