Looking through the website I find this:

"Your account is automatically topped up to 20 GBP every time it drops
below zero."

Is this still true? I think this would require a continuous credit card
authorisation and so would steer clear of it.

Voipfone does this (as it is a prepay service), but you can disable it.

It seems to be optional with voipfone, and you can top up only £5 if you
want.

What I meant to say there was that freespeech autotopup does not seem to
be optional as far as I can tell from the website. Which would mean the
only way to top up would be to autotopup £20. So if you wanted to leave
the service you would have to leave some credit.

It's proving to be quite difficult to find information on voip
websites. Voipfone for example advertises the lowest "package builder"
as £1.20 pcm. So I could be forgiven for thinking that is a minium, but
elsewhere I saw that I could sign up for free and have 5 minutes of
credit. So now what happens if I top up, can I continue without
subscription with my 056~ number?

The £1 [+ VAT] pcm is for a PBX extension arrangement.

A UK geographic number is £3 pcm.

There is no charge for the virtual 056 number, so just keep it topped up [or at least not run it out] and it will last indefinitely.

We managed to resuscitate a number that had been dormant for five years during Covid for a chap to work from home.
