On my BT landline I have a service called Anonymous Caller Rejection - so
if anyone rings with a 141 prefix or an unavailable number tries to ring,
the call gets rejected with a message to the caller to ring again without
holding their number.
This can prevent unwanted calls (e.g. non-sales calls!) but also
unfortunately genuine callers sometimes get rejected (doesn't happen often
though).
Is there a similar service available on any of the UK Mobile networks?
Thanks all,
Matt

If there isn't, then a YAC number can be set up to only forward calls
if a caller ID is shown. (www.yac.com)

*DOH*! I meant to say ....can prevent unwanted calls (e.g. SALES calls!).

yip - can also prevent calls from call boxes though (i,e someone from your
family is trying to call home in an emergency) also when someone fones from
abroad we often find the number wont come up.........
To cut out virtually all unwanted sales calls you could register with the
telephone preference service at http://www.tps-online.org.uk/tpsr/html/ I
used to get 4 or 5 unwanted calls a day, since registering they have almost
completly dried up. And it is a free service.

Any suggestions on whats the best way to wind sales calls up? If I hear the
call centre "noise" in the background, then the opportunity is there to hang
up even before the words "double glazing" are mentioned.

Start off interested, once caller's enthusiasm sounds engaged, start to
miss hear the odd word. Slowly turn into a stupid, deaf old rat bag.
Invite them round to your new address: you can make the police station's
address sound quite ordinary, if you try.
The caller is not likely to respond by making sure you get no more such
calls; far more likely to ensure you get plenty more. Unless they are
paying mobile rates, Annoying Double Glazing Inc., is unlikely to notice
the cost.

Those types of call should be flagged as "number unavailable" instead of
"number withheld". Number unavailable calls should get past the ACR
block (which is why some cold-callers now rig their lines to flag
"unavailable" when they should flag "withheld").

Or just report them to the TPC? And have a warm glow from helping
others?

Better still, reply in group.
Some calls through switchboards/exchanges may suffer the same fate.
Calls from my local hospital come up as anonymous on by mobile (o2)
and witheld when using 1471. ( I can't quite remember what happens on
my BT line).
This may of course, not work if you are a prepay subscriber, as some (all?)
networks only allow prepay subscribers to divert to the network's voicemail,
due to the way in which the real-time billing of prepay works.
Having subscribed to TPS, it is nice being able to tell the agent that they
have made themslves liable for a £5000 fine by disregarding your TPS
registration and then ask for their details (or ask to speak to their
supervisor) so you can make a complaint with a view to prosecution.
They usually hang up on you pronto, and you generally won't hear from them
again.
