If this is the case then it means that the old Orange Everyday 50
tariff (50 free mins/day to these numbers) will lose its appeal
pretty quickly and the going rate for old sim cards on this tariff
over on uk.adverts.telecom.mobile and Ebay is going to hit the floor.
A lot of other mobile phone tariffs that include 0845 and 0870 in
inclusive minutes will also be affected.
Will it also mean that Pre-Dial will have to stop their 'points
earning' scheme?
Will it also mean that the rate for calling a whole raft of
international numbers will double overnight? Telediscount and others
currently offer a lot of destinations at 1p/min in the evening (from a
BT Together phone) using 0845 access. These will presumably all have
to be changed to 0844 access at 2p/min.
Am I wrong?
Peter
I thought the only changes were to consumers pricing on BT Together? I
thought 0845 and 0870's were excluded from the all-new pricing structure?
Where did you hear about the reduction in kickback, cos it's news to me!

I can't remember where I read it some days ago, but see the post from
Angus Robertson of Magsys a few posts back (on uk.telecom). I quote:
"The tariffs for various operators using 0845 and 0870 numbers have
been reduced to the new BT prices, although the reduced income may
cause these numbers to be replaced"
OK, I could be wrong and/or misinterpreting the above but the meaning
seems pretty obvious to me.........just asking!
Peter
Ok, calls to 0845 are going up by 0.003p/min daytime (3.00p) and 0.001p/min
evenings and weekends (1.00p), calls to 0870 number are stay the same
daytime (7.509p) and evening (3.749p) but go down 0.498p (1.50p) at
weekends.

Thanks for clearing that up Chris ;)

0845 (and other local) evening is being reduced on standard to 1p from 1.5
0870 weekend on bt together reduced from 2 to 1.5
If the average retail prices are reduced, the wholesale prices that operators
receive will eventually change too, I'm not sure as to timescales at the moment
though.

Not quite correct - see my later post - there are changes for the BT standard
pricing for 0845/local calls as well.

So, getting back to my original question...........surely that means
that operators, whose margins are already pretty tight an the basis of
0845 and 0870 numbers, are likely to drop these numbers? And in the
absence of a low cost 'kick back' number like 0845, they will have no
alternative but to move to 0844 numbers at twice the cost (or more) to
the consumer?
Peter
To be honest (although you not going to like it), Telediscount is the only
company that makes any real use of 0845 off peak and 0870 weekend, and as they
are living on a different economic planet from everyone else I can't see any
change is likely.
