I did some checking when registering for this (5555 from a Vodafone) and it
appears that the deal is as follows:

75p flat rate charge per Incoming/Outgoing call on partner Vodafone networks
in Europe etc.

Outgoing calls are then charged at your contract or PAYG UK rate, inclusive
minutes are used first as in the UK. Stop The Clock does NOT apply!

Incoming calls cost 75p for up to an hour and UK callers are charged at
standard calling rates. Incoming calls less than 60 minutes do not affect
inclusive price-plan minutes or PAYG credit. After 1 hour its about 20p/min
apparently....but why would you when you can hang up and get another hour
for 75p!!

An even better bargain than I thought. Watch the others rush to follow
suit!!

Why is it a rip-off? Surely a step in the right direction compared to
current horrendous roaming charges?>

Your contacts in the UK, calling your UK number, never bear the expense
of calling your mobile while it's abroad.

When ever I go abroad and are paying for calls myself I always get a local
sim card, however despite the 75p charge VP alleviates the need for me to go
down this route??

Yes.

Your contacts at home can call you on your normal UK number and they dont

have to bear the expense calling a mobile network abroad (costly). Incoming
calls at 75p/hour are a bargain and outgoing calls can be paid for from
inclusive minutes (contract) which is also pretty cool.

Check the Vodafone site to ensure you select the right roaming partner to
take advantage of Passport savings.

Great if you can get it! They won't let me have it on Anytime 125 monthly
contract.

Every short 2-second call suddenly costs 75p. That sounds pretty
expensive to me.

Obviously people who use their phone to make long roaming calls will
find it cheaper but the majority of calls I make on holiday are of the
"where are you" variety to my better half when we separate to do shopping.

The real rip-off is GPRS roaming charges, though, and I'm still waiting
to see them come down.

You get charge 75p per call and call charges on top of that. U get 75p per
call even if its a few seconds (as far as im aware) its a rip of and your
way better of with a local card if ur going be calling people in country
your staying and thay can then phone you at the local mobile rate.

They always did - there has always been a minimum call charge of 1
minute (except zone 5). Before passport, a 2 second call from France to
UK was 75p and a 10 minute call was 7.50. With passport a 2 second call
is 75p (so no change) and a 10 minute call is 75p + 9 minutes at your UK
rate.

True.

Didn't realise that. Hmm. Makes it worth doing then.

They couldn't add it to my 3G Anytime account - it's allowed but they
couldn't get the computer system to accept it :(

I'll try again in a couple of weeks.

I believe the comparison talk3g.co.uk was making was VP versus getting a
local SIM card.

(Of course, there are some places, e.g. Canada where a local SIM would be
cheaper to call and cost less in incoming call costs.)
