Are there any Direct Debit Pay-as-you-go deals like Virgin's still?

We still have two phones on Virgin's Pay-as-you-go paid for by Direct
Debit. For one of the phones it's still almost perfect, a few pence a
month for most of the year then a few tens of pounds for one or two
months.

However with Virgin's price increases it's not such a good deal for
the other phone. Are there any other providers offering similar
deals?

They have some quite attractive deals, thank you.

A nice lady from Virgin rang me the other day, to see how I liked their
service.

I pronounced myself deliriously happy with everything, except the recent
price increases on the DD service, and the fact that Virgin had stopped
offering it.

(Actually, the price increases didn't affect me much; I use my phone
very little, comparatively, but it's nice knowing that wherever I am in
the world, I won't run out of credit, and have to go calling home for a
top-up).

The nice lady informed me, FWIW, that even though DD isn't on the Virgin
website any more, you can still get it if you ring up and ask for it.

So, yes, it's a bit pricey; but it suits me down to the ground,
especially as no-one else seems to offer it.

Exactly! That's why we're still on our Pay-as-you-go by DD. It's
just so absolutely painless, just use the phone and pay for how much
you use it, what a concept! :-)

Not on their website? Really?:

Who can we ask in October for this? ;)

Daughter is leaving the county for a while as part of uni course and
wants to keep her number without spending.

Ah, true, so it is there still.

But the quoted page says: "If you're on our Original Pay As You Go
tariff, you can choose to pay by Direct Debit"
i.e. it's apparently only available as a switch for anyone on that
tariff, and not any other tariff, even legacy ones.

The page for new PAYG customers is:-

riff.howdoi.sm286>

where it lists only the Addict tariff as generally available, though
Virgin Media customers can get the Simply 8p tariff by calling a number
shown there. But no DD option, nor any way of getting onto the Original
PAYG tariff, thence to make the switch, it would seem.

In the light of what you have found, I'll rephrase what I said to;
"not available to new PAYG customers and to any legacy PAYG tariff
users, save those on Original PAYG, via the Virgin Mobile website".

But I hope you'll agree that the gist of what I said (or meant) still
stands?

That's the problem, you have to keep calling 3 sales until you
find someone who both knows about it and says you can have it.

I'd be tempted to nab it now if you can... it may have gone completely by
October. I think you can still port numbers into Three mid-contract (which
is what one of these SIMs is) - only Voda insist you can only transfer when
you sign up.

Perhaps the "keep alive" feature of one call every 180 days (or
whatever) still works if the phone is roaming.

It works for my Orange sims - but I use texts, rather than calls.

Why on earth should receiving calls calls when overseas on a DD or Pay
monthly be so much more expensive than PAYG?

Except that I baulk at 40p/min and 15p for an SMS, whereas my Asda PAYG
phone is 10p/min & 5p/SMS.

But that's not a zero per month contract so doesn't have full roaming,
also it can be disconnected for disuse.

Myself i keep an Orange OVP Virgin for roaming, it's great to
be able to select any foreign network manually (that Orange has a
roaming agreement with) and not be stuck with whatever limited
choices a UK PAYG has when roaming.

If you can find someone with an OVP Virgin willing to part with it,
Orange will still allow transfer to a new owner (after passing a minimal
credit check)

Can you clarify that last papragraph please.

We have two Virgin 'pay as you go on direct debit' phones, is there
some sort of Orange deal we can move to?

No, you can't!
The initials OVP = Orange Value Promise, which sadly no longer exists.
They basically used to do a 'price match', but no longer do!

They do indeed exist, only ringfenced for new customers.
So you can transfer an existing one

Sorry, I know you are right (we have four)
What I meant to say was they Orange no longer offer this service to new
connections.
Does that sound better?

Interesting. I'm sure when I posted the link the exclusion wasn't there. I
probably just didn't spot it but I am sure I didn't see it.

Yes, what you are saying is then more or less absolutely correct.

The only similar service I can think of is Ikea's automatic top up.

Don't know why Virgin ended this. Come up with a good idea and then replace
it with a crap one. It's an odd business model but then Virgin is,
basically, a crap company which has just become consistently crap over the
years.

Lycamobile do an automatic top-up.

I have to agree with you. Some years ago Virgin Mobile customer service was
excellent. They even appeared to enjoy helping you. A year or so ago I
'phoned them to ask advice about their dongle for my computer. As a VM
customer I thought I might get a better deal but the person I spoke to
didn't seem to have any idea what I was talking about. When the customer
believes he knows more about a company's products that their customer
support you can physically feel the confidence ebbing away! I bought a
dongle from Three in the end.
