I am receiving data calls every day and sometimes many times a day from a
finance company. I have never dealt with this company and have no other
credit accounts. I have phoned the call number indicated on my phone and a
switchboard attendant answers. I explained the situation and after I then
spoke to several other employees they claim that my number is not on any of
their databases.

This is driving me crazy because the call can be at anytime and is repeated
whether or not I answer of reject the call.

I do not know of any way to have data calls blocked. Can anyone help?

regards,

"nobody"

Nuisance calls are a serious matter. Any reason why you don't name & shame
the company here?

You are giving them your DATA number are you?
This will be different to your VOICE number.
It is possible to have 2 data numbers, the normal one and a V110
number (vodafone know it as a DS9600 number).

I have never known about a DATA number and whether I on PAYG will have one.
Is there a way to determine this?

Can you describe the course of events when you receive one of these calls?
I am wondering if they are genuinely GSM data calls.

Graham,

My phone rings with a strange tone and the display says "Data Call". I then
have the option to answer it or reject it. If I reject it, my message
store provides a number to call. I have called this number but the company
say they have no record of my name or mobile number.

If when you receive the call it say "Data Call" then you have a data
number!. You will need to contact your network to get this number,
then you pass it to the company concerned to be removed from their
database.
Have you asked for a Fax number in the past, if so then you
automatically get a data number.
You could use another phone and call the number one higher than your
voice number. If the data number was allocated at the same time as the
voice number then this is "usually" what it will be.
If the data number was allocated at a different time then it could be
anything, not even the same prefix!!

Your data number is different to your voice number, so telling this
company your mobile number will not help.

COntact your network operator, ask them to disable your incoming data
service. You will never ever use it.

1. Dial up internet acces is virtually dead.
2. Dial-up internet access using a mobile phone is very dead.
3. INCOMING data to a mobile phone has virtually no use for the average
consumer.
4. Given that the OP didn't know that a data call was different to a
voice call it's reasonable to assume the OP is not a user of incoming
data, therefore disabling the incoming data service is a reasonable
course of action to solve the issue.

Jon,

Thanks to you and all the others for helping. I have emailed Vodafone
firstly asking them what my DATA CALL number is so that I can at least call
the sender. If that fails I will ask Vodafone to disable the number.

I get this from time to time as well.

I've finally figured that it is someone misdialling a voice call and
getting my incoming fax number by mistake. The phone displays Data
Call, but there are no data tones. Several times in rapid succession
this would occur, confirming that someone was trying to voice call a
number, so I tried connecting my mob to a computer so it would answer
the call as a fax, but it merely dropped the call after only few
seconds.

I suspect this is what you are experiencing. And by the way you
incoming fax or data number may not be anywhere numerically near your
voice number - mine isn't!

You don't hear data tones on the mobile for a data call. Your data
number (and your fax number) are routed to a modem bank that answers the
call and converts it to digital data, from there the call comes in as
fax or data, and the phone expects suitable computer controlled answering.

Speaker and mic are muted on these calls. You will always get silence.
Really the answer button shouldn't do anything either, as the only
correct answering sequence is (AT&Fx for fax followed by) ATA on the
data terminal (which can be bluetooth, usb, wire or ir connected).

That's interesting, and possibly useful to know.
