just tried to buy a £4 access bundle a couple of days ago and got the
free until end April message. Checked with Orange in case I was hearing
things but its true. Absolutely no usage limits (asked customer support
to repeat this several times). Using my Motorola V60 (which I bought
new on Orange contract three years ago) on payg I can connect to Orange
Internet and get decent unlimited 56K access to the Internet from any
PC/laptop. Orange intend this service to be available free as well
until end April. It isn't a mistake. In three years I have rarely used
the Windows GPRS drivers because of the expense but now I can watch BBC
News with Real Player and download XP service pack 2 in the car (if I
was mad enough) and all for free. Who needs 3G ;) I have also finally
realised how handy it is that the USB data lead also has a socket for
the charger!
I just hope this means Orange intend to come up with far more realistic
pricing on May 1st . £1/Meg on payg is just too much.

I've simply kept my payg phone (it's an out of contract t610) in my
computer bag with BT on. I'm hardly aware I have it, except I can get
online while travelling for nothing- well, when not on Virgin trains
which unfortunately I'm on most of the time at the moment.... :(
I agree with you about pricing. I wonder if the reason gprs is still so
highly priced is in part to encourage more people onto 3g? I have
broadband at home, so obviously I'm not going to pretend that there
isn't a big speed difference, but I've been pleasantly susprised by the
efficiency of the gprs service, at least for moderate web browsing.

When I first tried to use Orange GPRS with my V60 several years ago
the download speed was not much better than the 9.6k cellphone modem
speed. Only advantage was always on. I believe Orange limited the
number of downlink channels the phone was allocated. Now it flies
along. At quiet times downloads are slightly faster than on a 56k V90
landline modem. I wonder if the network has been beefed up specifically
as it is the fall back for the new 3G data cards.
I just wish I could have got that type of performance from Orange GPRS
a few years ago when I needed it for a business application. By the way
I am also using the seven day free trial of Onspeed which you may have
seen advertised all over the place recently. And yes it does do wonders
for browsing speed over GPRS as claimed - much to my surprise. Mainly
be recompressing text, graphics, animations on the fly. For typical web
browsing it reduces the data transfer by a factor of around 5:1 so I
think I will definitely buy it before pay by the byte starts up again.

I've been interested in this. I don't think there's a trial period
though, is there? I'd feel much better if I could try it for a couple of
days first.

downloaded it a couple of days ago. It did say try again in a few

Can anyone share info on how to connect to OrangeWorld BPRS Internet
with laptop and phone? I have a Sagem myX-7 and a Mac, no data cable so
infrared looks the only possibility of communicating between the two.
Any pointers to web-based instructions welcome.
The Sagem works fin on Orange GPRS but the manual is short of info on
using it as a modem.

Do a web search for Ross Barkman and modem scripts. I got my GPRS
Ericsson modem script from him- there may be one for the Sagem- I don't
know. I certainly managed to get gprs when using Mac OS 8.x, and no OS
X- using the same script.

to do anything to activate the free WAP/GRPS? If not, how do I check if it
is active?
I have browsed the pages marked as Free via the GPRS browser in the phone,
and went to try and buy Internet access marked as Orange World. The only
options were 1 day for �1 or a week for �5. I cannot see the �4 bundle
mentioned by others in this group.
