These settings are for users names passwords etc to access the GPRS
service. For email there are 2 key settings, the first is SMTP to send
email. SMTP is tightly controlled by all ISP's including mobile
telco's, this will be the Orange SMTP, smtp.orange.net. The second is
POP for receiving email, here you can put in your 'normal' email
settings, i.e. for NTL it is. pop.ntlworld.com.
Orange GPRS payg rate is £3 Mb so a simple email sent or received via
your phone should cost 1p.
Is it worth it? I think so. On New Year's I sent a picture attachment
of my wife and myself (fortunately I was in the background) to about a
dozen recipients wishing Happy New Year at a cost of 30p, a bit more
personal that a text, cheaper than sending to 12 people and quicker.
I've also sent pix from around the world e.g. the top of Ayres Rock
(full 5 bar GPRS signal) to a dozen recipients again cost 30p,
certainly less than the cost of one postcard. My friends enjoyed the
emailed pix as they got a daily travelog, although one did comment that
dragging herself off to work in the fog and rain in January was a bit
harder after getting an pic of us diving on the Barrier Reef.
Beware though Orange payg GPRS roaming is savage about £8 plus Mb. If
you can, unlock your phone and drop in a Virgin mobile SIM for roaming
access as it is a flat rate of £5 Mb UK or abroad. Check with Virgin
before you go that you can roam else set up direct debit, they will
only take out what you use.

If you bought your phone from Orange and are sing the SIM it came with
then you should not have any issues. If you have placed a SIM from an
old handset then you may need to contact CS to enable GPRS.
It sounds to me though like you don't even have the settings installed.
A quick visit to http://setup.orange.co.uk will remedy that. If it
doesn't work after you've installed the settings then you do need to
call customer services.

There are extras which can reduce that considerably. One if £4 for 4Mb
which lasts a month. The other is unlimited use for one day for £1.
Well unless they've been simplified away recently that is.
Steve.
GPRS will be much cheaper to use in your circumstances.

Contact customer services and get it switched on.

...and be prepared to fight to get it enabled, it took me a dozen
calls over several days before I finally managed to get it enabled on
my phone/account/sim card.

Yes it is. You add an "extra" each day that gives you unlimited GPRS
till midnight. If you pick a time and place when Orange GPRS is
actually working, that's a good deal.

Well you should be able to use both GPRS and GSM dialup, are you
talking about email OUT or email IN.
The settings for IN are the POP settings and should be the POP settings
of your current email address at NTLworld, they should be
pop.ntlworld.com
user name
password
These settings are the same if you are using both GPRS and dialup
For GPRS, the settings for the OUT are the SMTPsettings as provided by
Orange, you cannot use your NTLworld SMTP settings.
For Dialup the SMTP settings will be the ISP SMTP settings, i.e.
smtp.ntlworld.com
If you go abroad watch out, Orange roaming GPRS charges can be quite
savage. If your phone is unlocked get a Virgin and set up direct debit
(they only take out what you use) as they charge a flat rate of £5 Mb
in UK and abroad.
