how do you get the voicemail service to work. Have tried calling 222
and each time get
an SMS with no message. Is there a default voicemail number?

The default number is 222, works fine with my old Nokia Orange 5.1 and
my Virgin SIM.

If you are on about accessing voice mail from a landline or another
mobile provider then you have to call your own Virgin mobile number
and press # when the voice mail picks up then enter your voice mail
PIN.

You have to of course setup a voice mail PIN first.

222 is the default number only for the initial *set-up* call which
triggers the network to send your phone a SIM update. The SIM update
sets your voicemail key to a number in the form: +4405Y7941 XXXXXX where
07941 XXXXXX is your VM number. Y varies, I've seen 1 and 8 used there
so far, so predicting a VM voicemail number isn't as easy as it could be
(but you could always try both...).

Or press * which does the same...

Which number? 222?

I've try holding down the 1 key with both my Nokia Orange 5.1 and my
Nokia 8146 with my Virgin SIM and they both do dial 222 and connect to
the voicemail service.

Before anyone say anything about One2One/Virgin SIM's don't work in
locked Nokia Orange handsets. They do, well only in the Nokia Orange
5.1 (2148) nk502/503 (8148) and the nk402 (5130 some versions) sort
off.

All you need is the PIN enabled on the 121/Virgin SIM and set it to
1111.

Put the SIM in the handset and power it up. When it's says "Enter PIN
Code:" press the "C" button to clear the screen then before the "Enter
PIN Code:" appears again press and hold * until it flashes then again,
then enter "04" then "*", then "1111", then "*", then "1111", then
"*", then "1111", then "#". the phone should report "Code Accepted"
and bootup.

So it's: C **04*1111*1111*1111#

Trick also works with 121 Nokia handsets 2146, 8146 and 5146 some
versions to use Orange cards in.

Note this only bypasses the SPLocks until you switch the phone off,
then you have to do the code again.

Well it's better than paying £35 to Orange or 121.

No this is not another fake code like simclock, because my 8146 is
work with my 8k JT Orange SIM and my 5.1 is working with my 32k Virgin
SIM.

Later,

CN.

222 is only supposed to be used *once* for each account. When that set
up call has been made your SIM receives an update which changes the
number that the voicemail key will dial. Some handsets allow you to see
the voicemail number when you've dialled it, others do not. Once you've
set up your voicemail, dialling 222 will just get you an error message.

Once the set up is complete the number the handset is supposed to dial
to access voicemail *will* be in the +4405n7941 xxx xxx format. Haven't
the foggiest idea what happens to your voicemail access when you roam on
a foreign network though...

My Virgin VoiceMail number is +44 0517941xxxxxx In addition I have been
given a second number:
+447953xxxxxx, which I'm told is for roaming use (I had roaming enabled).

The first number only works from Virgin and not from BT, FT, Orange etc.
The second number gives "Calls to this number are barred" from Virgin but
will access
VoiceMail OK from BT, FT, Orange etc, so I guess it will work when roaming.

My SIM card has been programmed with the second number. The result of this
is that when I'm notified of VMail, the "YES" to listen to messages response
(Or pressing and holding the "1" key) just gives "Calls to this number are
Barred !". As a workaround I have put the UK VoiceMail access number in
memory One.

Why did they have to complicate access with two numbers !!!

No wonder we keep running out of phone numbers... :-/

I suppose one2one uses this sort of same bodge?

It would have made more sense, surely, for Virgin to have left your
"home" voicemail number alone and let you stick the "foreign" voicemail
number in your phone book - after all I presume you spend more time here
than abroad!

Yes, it does make Orange's one-number-for-all-users method look much
more professional.

Just out of interest, how do you access voice mail on Orange whilst
roaming? How does Oranges 'one number for all' get to know who you
are?

When you're roaming you access your voicemail as you would if you were
using a non-Orange phone in this country, but remembering to use the
full international format answer phone number (+447973100123). Since
Orange cannot rely on CLID to work out who you are when you want to
access answer phone from abroad you need to set up an answer phone PIN
before you go.

Which (I assume) is how it is set up for access in the UK, so no
difference when you roam?

So how exactly do you inform Orange who you are when you roam?

I was under the impression that you had to:-

1. Dial voice mail using the International form
2. Enter your own phone number (since as you say, CLID may not work)
3. Enter your PIN

It this right?

Yes thats right! Also if someone calls you while your'e roaming and
the call gets diverted back to vmail on no answer, the caller has to
enter your number again. (and you get charged UK-????-UK)
