Is there any way to set up 'autosave' for screenshots in Android Pie
(Android 9)?

I take a _lot_ of screenshots.
I _never_ need to edit them before saving or discard them.
I _always_ have to hit the "save" button _every_ single time.

Is there any way to set up 'autosave' for screenshots in Android 9?

Perhaps it's phone specific. I have Samsung S9 and it pops a choice
to edit etc. that goes away after a couple seconds. It always saves
when I do nothing.

Hi Joe Beanfish,
Thanks for letting me know your screenshot times out.

On my Moto G7 with (what they say is "almost stock") Android Pie (Android
9), when I press the side wakeup button, up comes a panel on the right side
(I can't screenshot it!) which takes the screenshot, and then, no matter
how long I wait, it patiently waits for me to press the "Save" button on
the top right, which requires not only another hand usually (one is holding
the phone), but also is unnecessary.

I can also snap a screenshot using the volume-down + wakeup button, but it
does the same thing, which is it sits waiting for me to press "Save" no
matter how long I wait.

Bummer.

There should be a setting in Android that times that out, IMHO.

My G6 Play works the same as Joe's. I press Vol-Down+Power (wake-up) and it
pops up with "Screen shot saved" with 3 options (share edit delete) below
that. Two seconds or so, the message goes away, but does leave an icon in
the top left notification area (next to my time display) that will stay
there until I manually clear it.

Maybe the problem with yours is that it's "almost stock", LOL!

That may be the case, since Motorola advertises they leave the OS alone
except for a few enhancements.

Is there a good freeware way to capture the capture of the screenshot?

I tried screenrec, but when it comes time to the actual screenshot, it
fuzzes everything out.

I can take a picture of the screen, but was wondering if there's a way to
screenshot the process of taking the screenshot so I could show you?

Not that I'm aware of. Using a camera or another phone to take a picture of
it would seem to be a logical way of doing it. Post the photo online with
whatever favorite site you use (I used to use TinyPic, but sadly, they're
now defunct).

SOLVED!

Almost never do we fail on the Android ng to do whatever we need to do!
<https://i.postimg.cc/nrRY7461/screenshot05.jpg>

Today I tested screen shot apps to solve a given "time delay" problem:
o *How do you snap a screenshot on Android 9 given a delay time in seconds*?
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/lBbHJdKgBaM>
<https://i.postimg.cc/7YNyvfSn/screenshot01.jpg>

One by one, I tested a variety of free ad-free screenshotters, e.g.,
o Screenshot Assistant, by Waskysoft
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.waskysoft.screenshotassistant>
... and ...
o Screenshot Assistant, by beatbrot
<https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.beatbrot.screenshotassistant/>
<https://github.com/beatbrot/ScreenshotAssistant>
etc.

These apps above turn the Android Pie (middle lower round bottom) "Home"
button into a screenshotter when it's pressed and held for about a second:
<https://i.postimg.cc/DZQxWbvC/screenshot03.jpg>
Where you have to set "Screenshot Assistant" as the "Google Assistant":
Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default apps >
> Assist & voice input > Assist app = Screenshot Assistant

Unfortunately, both those apps still required you to press a "save" button.

Then I found an "instant screenshots" & "delayed screenshots" app:
o Screenshot Tile [No root], by cuzi-a...@openmail.cc
o <https://github.com/ipcjs/ScreenshotTile>
o <https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.cvzi.screenshottile/>
o <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.cvzi.screenshottile>

This "Screenshot Tile [No root]" free ad-free app is a keeper!
1. Screenshot Tile can be used as a simple application icon
<https://i.postimg.cc/YCpMj1tP/screenshot00.jpg>
2. Screenshot Tile can be placed in the "notifications area"
<https://i.postimg.cc/L5TQWgGq/screenshot02.jpg>
3. Screenshot Tile can replace the "native screenshot method"
<https://i.postimg.cc/fbmKF09w/screenshot04.jpg>

But what I like best about "Screenshot Tile [No root]" no-ad freeware is
that it instantly solves this problem I've had for months of not being able
to autosave a screenshot simply by snapping it!

In summary, given they do different things, I'd recommend installing both
the "Screenshot Assistant" ad free freeware (if you're not already using
the "Google Assistant" as your "Home" button longpress for something else),
and the "Screenshot Tile [No root]" ad-free freeware (since they each snap
screenshots in different ways with different options).

That is, by adding these two free ad-free apps:
1. Screenshot Assistant, by Waskysoft
2. Screenshot Tile [No root], by cuzi
3. You end up with _three_ different ways to snap your screenshots.
<https://i.postimg.cc/FRPJn9Dr/screenshot06.jpg>

Since I document the hell out of Android, I snap a lot of screenshots!
a. We can now snap screenshots by at least four different methods
(hardware buttons, notifications area, long press Home key, & app icon)
b. We can now set the delay to up to five seconds (with countdown)
c. And better yet, we can set up an autosave for maximum efficiency!

UPDATE:

I always try to update my very many tutorial and solution threads so that
lurkers following these steps don't waste their time as I learn more subtle
details of finesse and efficiency through constant testing of all installed
APKs, all of which is designed to help myself & others be tremendously
organized & efficient on Android (more so than almost anyone you know).

To that end, after further testing, I deleted the Beatbrot F-Droid
screenshot assistant in favor of the Waskysoft screenshot assistant simply
because in further testing I found that _neither_ would work any other way
than as a longpress on the (round, middle, bottom) Android "Home" button.

So they were redundant.

Given both were essentially the same functionality, I opted for the only
very slightly more functional screenshot assistant.
o Waskysoft Screenshot Assistant {free, no ads, GSF independent}
o beatbrot Screenshot Assistant {free, no ads, ? GSF dependency ?}

At this point, this is my APK recommendation for perfect screenshotting on
an Android phone (mine is the Moto G7 on Android Pie) whose native
screenshot mechanism doesn't have either a timed or instant screenshot
feature.
1. Native screenshot mechanism
2. Screenshot Assistant
3. Screenshot Tile [No root]
<https://i.postimg.cc/FRPJn9Dr/screenshot06.jpg>

Native:
For my Android Pie Moto G7 (said to be "almost stock" Android 9), the
native screenshot longpress on the power button brings up a nice tool with
o A multipress screenshot mechanism;
o Whose best feature is it can scroll to the end of the "page";
o And who can crop and "edit", share, and then manually save the shot;
o But which can't work as an app icon or as a quick-access icon;
o And whose worst attribute is it requires too many button presses.

Screenshot Assistant:
o Whose best feature is it doesn't need the hardware button;
o In favor of adding a software longpress on the Android "Home" button;
o And who can crop and share and then manually save the shot;
o But which can't work as an app icon or as a quick-access icon;
o And whose worst attribute is it requires too many button presses.
<https://i.postimg.cc/DZQxWbvC/screenshot03.jpg>

Note that the setup for Screenshot Assistant isn't exactly intuitive:
<https://i.postimg.cc/P5ys1Hn0/screenshot07.jpg>

Screenshot Tile [No root]:
o Whose best feature is it allows for instant & delayed snapshots;
o Meaning it's the only single-press mechanism that I know of that works;
o And it can replace the native screenshotter (if that's what you want);
o Where it can be placed in the pulldown menu set of common tasks;
o And it has the best set of settings of all mechanisms;
o Such as saving to PNG or WEBP or JPEG (at various qualities);
o And it can set a secret passwd for other apps to snap screenshots;
o And it works either as an app icon or as a quick-access icon, or both;
o And it can instantly store the screenshots anywhere you want them to go.
<https://i.postimg.cc/nrRY7461/screenshot05.jpg>

*Screenshot Assistant, by Waskysoft (free, ad free, GSF independent)
o <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.waskysoft.screenshotassistant>

*Screenshot Tile [No root]*, by cuzi (free, ad free, ?GSF dependency?)
In summary, the key advantages of combining all three methods is (IMHO):
1. Native screenshot mechanism === scrolls to take long screenshots;
2. Screenshot Assistant = adds a software longpress to the "Home" button;
3. Screenshot Tile [No root] === adds truly instant & timed screenshots.

Update:

The purposefully helpful adult poster kelown has suggested a potentially
useful free screenshot program on Google Play that snaps and saves
screenshots sans _any_ button presses whatsoever (once activated).

See details of my quick tests of that app just now over here:

UPDATE:

This morning I updated to Android 10 from Android 9 on my $100 Moto G7.
o The screenshot _now_ autosaves (after about 5 seconds)

What sucks is that I read about a score of Android 10 reviews, many of
which were "What's different between Android Pie & Android Q", and yet,
absolutely _none_ of them told me this stuff that matters where I found out
the _bad_ news only moments into testing of the new Android 10 release!
o Those on Android 10... is it worth upgrading from 9 to 10?
What are the pitfalls you've experienced & the benefits?
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/X65cMyzAn-g>

Moving forward, I need to retest all my screenshot addons, specifically:
a. Gesture screenshot
b. Delayed screenshot
c. Timed screenshot
etc.

UPDATE:

The conversion of Android Pie to Android Q on my $100 Moto G7 seems to have
added the autosave feature that wasn't there in Android Pie (at least with
the Nova free launcher it wasn't).

However, that five second interval is forever when you're snapping multiple
screenshots, as I just tried today to document navigation gestures.

The bad news is that there's no explicit "save" button after snapping a
screenshot, but the good news is that, after experimentation, I figured out
that tapping anywhere seems to save the screenshot without having to wait
the seemingly interminable five seconds (which is too long) for the
autosave.

The five seconds should be settable (maybe it is, dunno yet).
o So it's really _not_ an autosave, 'cuz the autosave period is too long.

Also the "Share" options after a screenshot (or any share event) got,
instantly, more complex. I'm not sure yet why but I'm sure I'll get used to
it.
