Was the previous one connecting to Vodafone too? According to the Ofcom
pubs their 3G coverage is the worst or close to worst of the bunch.
Could that explain the difference?

That's a pretty good test, 'twas just a thought.

I like the Voda PAYG deal for light, non expiring use but the maps put
me off and I got a 3 one instead, which is 30days only on PAYG.

Maps here:

ar/3g/maps/3gmaps/coverage_maps.pdf

Are you in one of the better served Voda areas?

Another related thing you should consider:

A few days ago I got my Vodafone dongle going with my Eee.
However, in my kitchen, where I was doing this, and which
I already know to be a poor reception area, it would only
connect when on a USB extension cable. I guess the problem
is the EMI generated by the computer, which degrades the
signal to noise ratio when the dongle is very close.

The moral is: if you're having reception problems, just try
a USB extension cable. It might help. It doesn't need to
be very long.

Same weather conditions? Same rolling stock? Same number of other
people contending for bandwidth?

But not the same train, so no ide if the equipment on the train was working
correctly or overloaded. A poor comparison as there are still variables.
