giffgaff, the new virtual mobile operator on O2, launches its PAYG service
today. For full details go to giffgaff.com but briefly, calls are 8p/min,
texts 4p and 'phone data' is free for the first few months (no tethering
allowed, as I understand it). Possibly uniquely 0800 calls are also free, as
are calls to other mobiles on the giffgaff network (10 topup required every
3 months which expires after ???).

Oooh... I've got some Tiscali Smarttalk credit (formally AXS) I used to use
on
Orange free 0800, to use up.

What's their website?

Other landlines and mobiles: 8p/min
033, 034, 037: 80p/min

Even if that's accurate, with free 0800 access you could use a callthrough
like
www.call18866.co.uk/ to call 03 numbers

Seems to be 100MB/day. But according to this post that's because they haven't
finished building the billing system for it yet, so launched anyway:
http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Blog/A-bit-of-news-about-our-pricing/ba-p/29

Interesting blog post on 'unlimited' tariffs:
http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Blog/Free-Unlimited-Everything-For-Life/ba-p/522
(posted by their 'Proposition and Product Theorist'... sounds like a pure
mathematician to me)

Calling international ain't cheap though (outside EU, Aus, NZ, Pakistan,
India, US and Canada it's 1 pound/min).

Some of the 'community' stuff is interesting though... various discussions
on how they might set their tariffs etc.

Someone official posted on their forum saying this was a mistake and should
be 8p.

Yes it is, it's staggeringly cheap international, if you use the free 0800
to call through indirect providers

http://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/residx.htm
Lists possible indirect providers, some of which have 0800 access
like:
1899.com for non-BT lines

Looks very interesting indeed! Think I'll be giving this a go once my iPhone
contract ends in a month's time - SIM ordered and put you in as the
recommendation. Even if the free data is only for 6 months that should easily
tide me over till the next iPhone comes out and then I can decide what makes
more sense at the time.

When BT Cellnet's brand name acquired negative value (as a result of
diabolic customer service) they changed the name to O2.

Why are they changing the name to giff gaff then?

They aren't. O2 will stay just where it is. giffgaff is an 'arm's-length'
MVNO - effectively a startup seeded with some O2 people. It's a bit of an
experiment in 'social media' - being arm's length O2 can shut it down, steal
their good ideas, or use them to hoover up revenue that wouldn't be
attracted to the main network.

It's a little bit like the R&D department has been given its own network to
play with and test out things (tariffs, features) that might get
incorporated into the main network one day. And to try out things that
wouldn't work with the 'big' business model.

I don't care if it is for chavs, if i can make landline calls for 1p per min
and mobiles at weekends for 4p per min (plus connection charge)
through a 0800 indirect provider like 1899.com for non-BT lines

Dimbo thinking about it for 10 seconds is hardly proof that it is
for chavs.

Problem is you can't seem to dial any 0808 number on giffgaff, doesn't
matter what format you try, even without first zero, you get network
message saying number not recognised.

0800 is ok.

It took Virgin a year to realise their mistake of offering free 0800,
in those days calls to landlines were 15p per min and 0800 indirect provider
AXS were offering calls to landlines at 2p per min at all times.

I wonder if giff gaff have made the other mistake Virgin made when they
started,
have they left their SMSC open??

Try changing their SMS message centre number to ones belonging to other
networks

Virgin left there's open and using some other networks SMSC meant free SMS,
until Virgins SMS server was swamped with foreign SMS's
It was a common mistake made by new networks

You can't seem to send text to landlines, using the correct
