I know nothing about mobile phones, but I would like to have one while I go
on holiday or working away, just so the kids can make contact in case of
emergencies. What is the best deal and provider given the following:
I'm not interested in size, style or features - any old thing will do, it
will probably stay in the car.
I have no reason to make calls except in emergency but will be paying for
calls and text messages from my children at home TO the mobile.
I will not be able to hear the phone where I will be, so it must store voice
messages and or text and be cheap or free to collect them when I need to.
I need coverage in Wales (Oswestry/Snowdonia), Stratford-on-Avon,
Wellingborough, Sussex.

I have seen PAYG for as low as £29.99 (T180 with BT) but am looking at the
Mitsubishi Trium Geo T-Mobile £35 but have no idea if these are the best
deals around....

Come on guys, help me out, but bear in mind I have no interest in phones at
all - I just need one, just in case.

T Mobile / Virgin is out for Wales/Snowdonia, Voda or Orange best bet.
and you can get both of those phones SPunlocked to take any networks Sim

Orange OVP Virgin has free Voicemail, and No service charges
But you have to qualify for a contract
I think Sony J70 is the cheapest on it, at about 80quid at CPW
Unless you can get someone to offer you their unwanted OVP Virgin Sim cheap ?

Who's doing Trium Geo on T Mobile, for 35quid ?
Ugly phone, but full of features.

Just to expand on Steve's comments. Orange or Voda are probably the best
networks for coverage. OVP Virgin = is a pay monthly tariff on Orange that
has no line rental you just pay for calls and text. It is also refered to as
the "No line rental option". CPW = is Carphone Warehouse
(www.carphonewarehouse.com) who are showing a Siemens C25 at £49.99 as their
cheaptest phone on Just Talk (the orange Pay as you go service).

Another alternative would be to get an Orange or an unlocked (will accept a
SIM from any network) phone off eBay and a Just Talk SIM from
www.mobileshop.com.

Also keep in mind that it is more expensive to call from one network to
another so it would be a good idea for you and you family to be on the same
network.

Hope that heps.

John.

Just to expand again ... I'm from North Wales myself and have to agree with
John and Steve. From experience I would probably go with Orange, I've found
a few places where Voda are dead but Orange have good coverage. But between
the two you can't go far wrong.

Hope this helps ....

Thanks all you guys, very useful and appreciated.
I may well forget the Wales coverage issue since this is a one off.
Most use will be near Stratford-on-Avon, Wellingborough and Sussex where the
phone will be left in the glovebox.

The free voicemail retrieval would then be the most useful feature so Virgin
or T - Mobile sounds better, remember I don't intend to make calls. So I may
go for the Trium Geo on T Mobile.

For the Steve, who asked, the Trium Geo on T Mobile is available at
Amazon.co.uk at £34.99. It says "Fresh" in the title, does mean anything
significant? Apart from P&P will I have any hidden costs? I assume I will
need to buy some credit, but will the SIM card be in there?. Will I have to
pay to register it? Remember I know nothing about mobile phones. Do these
phones normally come with some credit, chargers etc Any comments on this
edeal from Amazon?

You can also get Free Voicemail on Orange OVP Virgin,
all the other Orange contract privleges, like everyphone,
and all free Voicemail deposits into other Orange phones
and free 0800 for use with CCs
(Which real Virgin mobile used to have but withdrew)

Ahh.. then it's not a T Mobile deal, but a Fresh deal
Fresh are a virtual network on the T Mobile network,
run by Carphone Warehouse.
They charge by the min, instead of the sec
Calls from Fresh to T mobile are charged at on network rate
But Calls From T mobiles to Fresh maybe at crossnetwork rate
and I think the Fresh deal has to be bought by DD or credit card ?
But It's a good deal for the phone, which I would use with another Sim

Geos are easy to unlock, if it's supplied locked ?
Being dualband If/when unlocked you can use any Sim in it
For better network coverage, I would put a Voda PAYT Sim into it instead

Or better still ask on u.k.adverts.telecom mobile for the transfer of someones
Orange OVP Virgin Sim which probably won't cost you much more ?
and cheaper rates than Voda PAYT, with all free Voicemail, etc
