So you wondered who's behind all those different 118 directory enquiry
numbers in the UK and how much they cost ? Well, I find this mighty
confusing which is why I'm trying here to make some sense of it here:
http://www.marcuskern.com/info/118.htm
There are literally hundreds of 118 numbers and providers. I've only
fished out a few that I felt were worth mentioning.
Over time I'm aiming to get more and more useful information about the
available directory enquiries together here. If you like to help with
your comment (good or bad) please e-mail me at 1...@marcuskern.com.
Currently the list is for National (UK) directory enquiries only.
Check it out:

Have you seen the official Oftel site at
http://www.newdirectoryenquiries.com ?

This is NOT an official Oftel site, despite having the Oftel Logo.
See disclaimer at http://www.oftel.gov.uk/consumer/for/dqs/
David.
Whoops, I hadn't read that. I did find the site from the Oftel link and, I'm
sure like many others who visit it, assumed it was approved by Oftel because
it carries their logo.
I suppose you could still call it the official site in that it's been set up
by the service providers it lists.
There's really no need for a web site: if you want to know the number for
directory enquiries, just ring directory enquiries and ask for it ;)
Of course if you have access to the web you may as well use that to look up
a number.

sorry :-((
Yeah well, the point of my site is really to
a) give an overview over existing and upcoming providers in a simple table
b) compare prices to find the cheapest provider for your query

Being as this is utm - I'd suggest using the BT or Yellow Pages WAP
sites to search for a number via GPRS. Cost will be negligible -
certainly a tiny fraction of calling any of the DQ providers.

I had to find a number only yesterday and used 118500 from my Orange phone.
I discovered wap.bt.com shortly afterwards and found that it wasn't working
(whatever you entered, it gave a result of "sorry this service is
temporarily unavailable" or something along those lines).
Last time I used 118500, the call didn't appear on my bill until the
following month.
