From our other thread on charging a battery shaver, I understood that
any USB charger is okay as long as the current matches or exceeds what
is required by the device to be charged. However, my iPad Classic will
not charge with an iPhone charger and USB lead but it charges using
the original charger and FireWire lead. What causes the mismatch?

It probably will charge but will deny it. I can’t speak for an iPod, but an
iPad will charge from a phone charger, but very slowly. Only higher current
chargers with the appropriate signalling will cause it to admit to being
charged.

I have an iPod Classic which I put on charge a couple of weeks ago. No
special Apple cable or PSU, just plugged it in and left it. It took
maybe 3-4 hours before anything would appear on the screen, but I left
it on overnight and it charged up fully and works perfectly.

Remember Apple put resistors inside the USB-A plug so that their charger
can detect whether or not it is an Apple device on the other end.

My mistake in referring to an iPad.

I charged the iPod for several ours and the battery was flat at the
end of it. The guy that replaced the battery said only the original
charger would work but gave no reason. Could it be that the iPod is
looking for higher current than an iPhone?

What sort of iPod do you have? From what I’ve read, an older classic
version won’t charge over USB, only sync.

I think it's 4th generation iPod. This could be the answer but I don't
remember it coming with separate leads for charging and sync'ing.

If it’s one that looks like a mobile phone, ie has a touch screen, it
really ought to charge from a standard phone USB charger.
