I have been looking at sending out group texts to some mobiles of
members of a voluntary organization with last minutes details of
programmes etc I have so far looked at www.silverquick.net.

What i am trying to do is guage interest for the service as theres no
point in sending sms to duff mobiles or mobiles that cant read SMS

Has anyone got any better ideas that we could use, cost bieng the main
issue because we are a charity.

I'm not aware of any UK mobiles that cannot receive SMS now.

SMS is certainly an inexpensive means of notifying lots of people, but
it's difficult to make cost suggestions as silverquick are one of those
companies that for some reason doesn't publish pricing on their website.

You should be aware that SMS isn't guaranteed to be instantaneous -
especially bulk systems. If it is critical that your group members
receive the messages, you should implement some kind of call back
acknowledgement that they have received the info (bear in mind that even
a delivery report won't tell you that the _person_ has received and read
the message).

I would only be happy to send messages to users who have their phone
on all the time and know how to read messages, otherwise they will be
a waste of money.

It's up to you to determine the interest by talking with your proposed
users.

Better ideas for what? Yes, there are plenty of ways to do SMS to a
number of users but they all cost money.
