We need to connect some remote PCs (not laptops) back to a central Internet
connected server and allow them to communicate using a (in house written)
program that normally talks over our tcpip based LAN.

Is there a USB/ serial/ not sure device that just 'looks like' a network
card but works over GPRS? Ideally we just want to access FTP etc across the
link without getting involved in the mobile 'bit'.

Does it exist? Am I asking too much?

Any info/ advice most welcome.

TIA

Which end initiates the FTP session? If it's the central server, you're are
going to have issues.

Otherwise, you could put a PCMCIA>PCI adapter card in the remote PCs and
stick a GPRS PCMCIA card in them. With a suitable SIM, the PCs could then
initiate transfers.

Or hang a serial cable and a handset off the back of the PCs and make calls
that way.

Or these people http://www.elan-digital-systems.co.uk/ look like they could
come up with a custom solution for you.

Be very careful when configuring GPRS-based systems for anything other than
"plain ordinary surfing"

We were trying to get "SMS push WAP" set up for server alarm monitoring and
alerting to a duty human's phone. While attempting to configure
Nagios/Kanel/etc to get this working I pinged the IP address of one of the
phones then tried to connect to it on port 80. Big mistake, about five
seconds later the mobile network's abuse department came down like a ton of
bricks on us and our ISP, we spent all morning having to prove we were not
cracking them.
