Android text messaging

Could someone explain the bewildering set of instructions for the
message notifications in Android?

If I go to Settings > Notifications > Messages, I assume All Messages
notifications should be set to 'On'.

What does 'All 'Default settings' notifications' mean? What the the
consequences of toggling this on or off? At the moment it shows
'Person A' as 'about 6 notifications per day'. If I turn her off,
will this mean no notifications or will it move her to the default
(which is what I want)? 'Incoming messages' is toggled to on. Should
this be on or off? If I turn it off, all messages notification
remains at on.

Does all of this relate to visual messages on the scree, to the
notification sound or both? How do I move everyone to the default as
at the moment some messages are being notified and some are not?
