Hi Adrian

Try http://www.e-txt.co.uk/

e-txt is a powerful text message distribution system that operates like your
favourite e-mail application - but rather than e-mails it allows you to use
your PC to send and receive text messages. It provides a low-cost, time and
money saving PC based text messaging solution ideal for all sorts of
organisations and individual users. Perfect for:

Power Texters
Mobile communications
Clubs & social organisations
Confirming appointments
Mobile marketing and promotions
Customer support and alerts
Sending information updates and alerts is faster, cheaper and more
convenient than most other forms of communication.

Mobile Marketing & Promotion - e-txtT brings the power of mobile marketing
to even the smallest organisation. The ability to send and receive and then
filter and sort messages, as well as automatically sending replies based on
message content, allows the deployment of innovative and effective mobile
marketing and sales promotions.

Customer Relationship Management - e-txtT allows all sorts of organisations
like hospitals, hairdressers, dentists, clubs, employment agencies, schools
and universities to communicate efficiently and inexpensively via text
message with their patients, clients, students and customers.

Mobile Communications - e-txtT makes its easy for businesses, work
colleagues, clubs and social organisations, friends and family to stay in
touch via text message using a simple PC based application.

Thank you for the replies. Having looked at one or two of these
facilities, I'm now concerned that they might be a method for spammers
to obtain the numbers I send to.. Any comments on that?

Cheers,

In article <j01tr1plfrs2116hr...@4ax.com>,

If you use a "reputable" service who charge you for the priveledge
then they shouldn't be selling the numbers on... I've been using
http://www.textmagic.co.uk/ for over a year now without problems. You
hav to pay per message, (buy credits in advance) but I'm prepared to do
that for a good service.

They have both a PC application (Which I've not used) and an email to
SMS service (which is what I use) They even allow reverse TXTs which
are emailled back to you.

It only works with MS Outlook. From that page:
"Please note that Vodafone Text Centre is not available for Lotus
Notes users or other email systems."

Pay them £15 and you get 300 messages (5p each) I've found it very
reliable. I think you can also send for free but maybe then it's not so
reliable

I've got an Orange phone but I couldn't find anything on that site
mentioning sending texts from a PC keyboard.

Thanks, all, for the other suggestions.

There are several ways to achieve this.

Primarily:

1) Connect to a website. Register your details and your mobile phone
number. Whenever you want to send a text, access the website and send the
text. The main disadvantage to this is that unless it is the website of the
network operator and the phone number you supply belongs to that network
operator, when the text is sent, it will not look like it came from your
mobile. When you get a reply to that text, it won't go to your phone, it
will go to your account on the website. Therefore if you text a friend that
you are going to meet them in a few minutes, you're not going to get any
reply to your phone unless you hang around and wait for it by checking your
account on the website.

2) Get some phone software that connects your phone to your computer. Good
for syncing MS Outlook contacts as well. Whenever you send a text, you open
up a program (very email client like). The program communicates with the
phone and sends the text that way. The program you use largely depends on
the phone you are using. Connecting the phone to the PC can be by the data
cable supplied by the phone, an IRDA (infrared) cable if your phone supports
infrared) or bluetooth.

I used to use 1). Not I use 2) and it is by far the best way. You don't
have worried such as an internet connection or ensuring that the website is
up and running and working. You don't have to worry about your phone not
getting any replies to texts. You can also sync and transfer other data,
e.g. contacts, images, songs, etc.

You could consider using a Z-text Fixed Line SMS modem that comes with it's
own simple messaging software, this will give you the benefit of showing a
correct senders number, and an internet connection is not required. Texts
are under 10P and itemised on your BT bill like any other call.
