Hello

My 6110 saga continues. To recap, I am now on my 4th 6110. All have
suffered with the same problems, i.e. buzzing noises from the earpiece
and no service when handing off between cells in good reception areas.
I have just taken delivery of some new 'toys' and guess what, they
don't work correctly either.

Firstly the desktop charging stand. It doesn't charge if you place the
phone on the charger with battery on the phone. It will only charge
the battery separately. Nokia's response to this; 'Sorry sir but we
didn't test the software with the charger. You will need version 4.06'
- I have 4.05. :-(

Secondly the data suite. Works fine, cable and infra red, until I want
to use hyper terminal to go into SMS interpreter mode. I Issue the
command AT*C as per the AT command reference from nokia and get the
response ERROR. Oops that's not right. The Nokia Data Suite however
does send SMS correctly, so it can't the phone or the installation.
Must be some secret code which Nokia have inserted so 3rd party
vendors can't write their own SMS software. :-) Maybe this post should
be in alt. conspiracy

The final word from Nokia was that the latest software revision is
4.33 and they will do an upgrade for free if I send them my phone.
About 3 day turnaround.

Any thoughts o the Data suite problem gratefully received.

My Nokia 6110 does seem to have some of the same problems...
Most noticeable is that it takes ages to move transmitters, even in high
coverage areas...

How can I check the software version of my phone and if I want it
updated, what's the address?

If your using this on a laptop check your power save options in your control
panel and make sure power save is disabled. not all laptops will function
with CDS if power save is not disabled..

From what we've found so far, the Nokia data suite does not provide an
SMS interpreter. Best to use a Nokia data card instead...

The Nokia AT command reference states: " AT*C start SMS Interpreter".
I have checked this using Hyper Terminal. I type AT? and sure enough
it lists AT*C as a valid command. Have Nokia deleted/changed the
command or have they removed the SMS interpreter functions as you
suggest? I wish someone could get to the bottom of this for me.

Nokia Data help desk are looking into it but as yet haven't called me
back.

Update time:

_Phone Software_

The latest phone software from Nokia is V4.33. I have had my handset
exchanged for this model. So far so good. There are some minor changes
to the profile menus -'Long & Loud' SMS alert is now called
'Ascending'. 'Warning Tones' is now 'Warning and Games Tones'. It
would also appear that the SMS volume is linked to the ringing volume.
i.e. if the I set ringing level 1 the SMS alert is quiet and vice
versa.

When in use I have also found an improvement. The 'No Service' areas
between cells seem to have disappeared. When the phone does go 'No
Service', it will very quickly log onto a new cell, usually within a
few seconds. A great improvement over the 1 - 2 minutes it took
before. Because of this I hope to see an improvement in battery life
as the phone is not going on to full power to try and find a cell to
log on to.

The buzzing in the earpiece is still present.

The desktop charger now works correctly when the phone is inserted
with the battery connected.

There is a problem with V 4.33 and Nokia Data Suite 1.2 (NDS). The
infra red function has now gone intermittent. I have confirmed this by
using a V3.14 phone which works perfectly with my installed version of
the NDS. Basically if I connect the phone using the RS232 cable the
NDS works fine. If I then disconnect and re-connedct using IR, also no
problem. If I then disconnect and re-connect a 2nd time using Ir I get
no connection. The Ir symbol on the phone flashes, then goes static,
then flashes again. Nokia are looking into this for me.

_Nokia Data Suit 1.2_

I have been having problems getting the NDS to enter SMS interpreter
mode using the AT*C command. Nokia Data have now confirmed this to be
a problem and have escalated it to the engineers in Finland as of 10am
this morning. They have also been informed of the Ir problem I
outlined above. I am currently awaiting a response from them.

Please note the phone software I am using is on a British 6110 using
the Vodafone network. I am not sure whether this is a universal piece
of software or whether there will be variations for different
countries.

Sorry for posing such a long article, but I know from the amount of
email I am receiving that the 6110 is causing problems all over Europe
at the moment and I want to give as full an account of what's
happening as possible.

I am also having problems with my 6110, I'm on my second one and it keeps
turning itself off, also I have just tried out a hand free kit (not Nokia)
and when I use it the phones goes into HEADSET mode, ok, but when I take it
off, it tends to stay on headset mode!, the incar charger(not Nokia) doesn't
work at all!!!!!!!

If you are using non-Nokia accessories, you can't assume that the 6110
is at fault. Certainly, as far as the in-car charger is concerned, that
is clearly faulty if your Nokia supplied charger works fine!

Try:

AT+CMGF=1
AT+CMGR=1
AT+CMGL=4

Peter is right. My Nokia ACP-7X says it has an output of 3.7v DC @
355mA. This is an unusually low level so the "normal" design is not
suitable.

I should build an in-car charger for my 6110. Does anyone know the
output spec. of the optional mains travel charger?
