I have a Nokia 3310. When the keypad is locked, I can still dial 999
and 112. This has happened when the phone has been in my pocket and
the keypad locked (obviously I have been sitting on it and managed to
press the 999 buttons somehow)...

I know this is a feature of the phone and of may other mobiles but how
do I turn it off so i don't call the emergency services
unintentionally?

Thanks
Fraser.

It's part of the GSM spec although AFAIK there is software available to
switch it off. I can't recall the name of the software though!

This has been discussed here very recently. It is part of the GSM
specification that 112 can be dialled from the keypad locked state,
most UK phones also allow 999. Take a look at www.dejanews.com for the
full thread or if your newsserver has reasonable retention then take a
look at previous posts. I am not sure if it is possible to turn this
off using a data cable and software (cue Steve Terry). HTH

Who me ?
The dial 999 through keypad lock can be enabled or disabled with NKprofile and a datalead.

But not 112, which doesn't really matter as it much harder to
accidentally dial.

Although it doesn't work with all Nokias, it seems most Orange
versions don't, something about Orange firmware ?

I disabled 999-override with the NKprofile. If the phone gets a (n
Orange) signal, 999 will override the keypad lock but if the phone has
lost the signal 112 will override but 999 won't. So yes, it looks like
Orange have Done Something with the phone. YMMV.

One funky thing I am sure I noticed is that when out of the country, 999
doesn't work while locked anyway! (or was I dreaming at the time? Sure I
tried it while in Hungaroland)

Anyway if I wasn't dreaming a possible solution if NKProfile is not
available is to leave the country. ;-)
