Which is the fastest way to receive broadband internet access adsl or
cable modems the like of which people like Telewest Broadband use?

Another thing regarding adsl i understand that there are different
speeds of adsl, to get a faster adsl connection is it down to the
speed of adsl modem or is it a faster signal sent down the line.

Thanks in advance.

It's down to the service you subscribe to. Generally, most home users use
the 512K service, which costs roughly the same as that provided by the cable
companies. 512K is 512K, no matter who you get it from ;-) To get a faster
connection on ADSL, requires an exchange modification, with cable I'm not
sure. The modems currently used for ADSL are capable of 8 Mbit download
speeds.

both services are in theory equally fast for home connections. They both run
at 512k typically, but the upstream speeds on adsl are twice as fast.

whilst the cable modem is capped (at least on ntl orginal area) at
600kb. hence cable has the potential to be "slightly" faster in
download.

But with NTL's over subscribing of their local network it is unlikely
that you will see anything like the advertised speeds at the moment.
There are a significant number of users who don't appear to be able to
hold synch for any significant amount of time which is apparently down
to this problem as well.

But hey, the original poster may be lucky..

well if you haven't notice I am an ntl customer and get 600kb nearly
all the time. as other ppl I know. it goes back to what I was saying
before, some people are luckly and some people are not. I think it is
Nottingham they are having some problems, so it depends where he
lives. that applies just as much with adsl. hence he should be
asking "what is the average speed people are getting in my area"." not
the speed of the techonology since that can change by region by region
cause of supply and demand.

Except in my case 512k is more often 700-800k :)

Don't know why, but not complaining!
